The ReadMe says ...

Snow Leopard Support: "Old" style Contextual menus are not supported in Mac OS X 10.6 and higher. Please use the menu bar app or service item included in this software distribution for similar functionality.

It looks like time for an app name change.

Apple Brother Printer Drivers

Ward reviewed on 18 Dec 2011
Thanks, Drsfg, for reporting success with the printer driver from the Brother site. I had similar success, with one speed bump (see #3).

1. I downloaded and installed the 10.6 CUPS Printer Driver 4.0.0a on my 10.6.8 system. (No duplex yet.)

2. Restart for good measure. (Still no duplex.)

3. System Prefs > Printer & Fax: delete the Brother HL-5150D printer and Add it back, This regressed the CUPS driver from 4.1.0 to 4.0.0.

Duplex is back!

I started to post this as a reply to Alexf's report, but I changed it to a review so that I could give this update a 0.5 star rating.

This experience has taught me to check MacUpdate before blindly accepting risky offerings from Software Update.

KeyCue

Ward reviewed on 02 Nov 2011
I've been using KeyCue since 2006, and I highly recommend it to users who want to make the most of keyboard shortcuts.

A double-click and hold on the Command key brings up a display of all current keyboard shortcuts. "All" includes shortcuts from the current app, Dock, screenshot, AND 3rd party add-ons (QuicKeys, Keyboard Maestro, iKey). Shortcuts with the Command modifier are highlighted. Holding down additional modifiers (Control, Option, Shift) highlights those shortcuts.

The KeyCue display is especially helpful when adding your own shortcuts with System Prefs > Keyboard Shortcuts or a 3rd party add-on. You can see at a glance whether your new shortcut key will conflict with any current shortcut.

Those concerned about the modest cost of KeyCue should weigh that against the time they'd spend looking thru menus and add-on apps for the same information. Ergonis also offers affordable bundles with their other excellent apps, Typinator and PopChar for Mac & Windows.

My only minor complaint about KeyCue is that it occasionally pops up when I didn't request it, usually when I'm typing keyboard shortcuts in rapid succession. That's not really a problem because KeyCue disappears with the next key click or mouse action.

Typinator
Ward commented on 26 Sep 2011
Back in June, I asked about Typinator on the TextExpander page:

"Although I've been very happy with Typinator (and other Ergonis products) for quite some time, the praise I see for TextExpander keeps tempting me to give it a try.

"[Are] there former Typinator users out there who can tell me why they switched to TextExpander and haven't looked back?"

Since I didn't get any response, I'll ask here:

If you're a former TextExpander user who switched to Typinator, please tell us why you like Typinator better.

LCDTest
Ward commented on 25 Jul 2011
I found LCDTest 2.0 offered by Ekim Software at http://www.ekimsoftware.com/products/lcdtest/

The app was created on 27 Nov 06, the same as the LCDTest on this page. However, the Version 2.0 new pattern features described above do not correspond to the Ekim product.

Dimmer Than Dim
Ward commented on 24 Jul 2011
Does this developer (Zhen Liu aka Zillion Mobile) actually exist? MacUpdate's "Visit Developer's Site" goes to the Mac App Store Preview page, and "Dimmer Than Dim Support" links to a non-existent site (at this writing).

Adobe Flash Player
Ward commented on 06 Jun 2011
Adobe's Flash Player download page (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/) says ...

Adobe Flash Player version 10.3.181.22
Universal Binary for Macs | 6.08 MB

Don't believe "Universal Binary" -- the Requirements page says ...

PowerPC® based computers are not supported with Flash Player 10.3.

And the downloaded installer is Intel-only.

EasyFind

Ward reviewed on 30 May 2011
Spotlight wins the search speed race because the files are already indexed. Pick the GUI you like the best: native Spotlight, Finder's Find, HoudahSpot or Tembo (my favorite).

But Spotlight is a loser when it doesn't index all file content, e.g., HTML tags. EasyFind is the winner here, if you're willing to wait for the files to be searched for each query.

iSight Disabler
Ward commented on 24 May 2011
iSight Disabler 3.0 worked fine on the iMacs I support at my local public library -- see my 10 Dec 09 report.

The iSight patch stopped working when I updated the iMacs to 10.5.8. When the kids eventually discovered PhotoBooth was back, I returned to techslaves.org and found the 3.5 update for 10.6. Another user discovered the 10.6-specific update worked for 10.5.8.

I modified the “os_version” check to include both 10.5.8 and 10.6+ and then created an AppleScript app to install on the library iMacs. The librarians can now turn the iSights on or off.

Here’s the updated AppleScript file & app:
