Adobe Flash Player

Umaromc reviewed on 26 Jan 2012
• Its Flash, what's there to run web-based Flash content besides the Flash plug-in? If I can't get the industry to leave the standard should I make one-star posts about Flash on MacUpdate?

• I use the beta builds, such as this one, to KNOWINGLY test while keeping the latest, stable build installer for such times that I feel the beta's not ready for full time use

• I'm not worried about CPU cycles. I simply don't notice slowdown, I'm not folding virtual proteins or rendering ray-traced scenes in the background. 1080p/h.264 video content via YouTube plays without hiccup and smoother than WebM format, unfortunately.

• Interactivity hasn't been a problem in awhile. An earlier beta somehow wouldn't recognize mouse click actions (ie; via YouTube), but that's been fixed.

Starry Night

Umaromc reviewed on 15 Jan 2012
AWESOME! Made me feel like I had just installed Windows for Workgroups 3.11 off of four hundred 3 1/2" disks onto some crap Gateway 2000 PC and installed this screensaver after a lengthy download via my 9600 baud modem! Oh man, now should I install AOL, Compuserve or Apple's eWorld???

AWESOME!

Silverlight
Umaromc commented on 02 Jan 2012
The only thing I use this for is Netflix and video plays in HD when available and plays well (using via Firefox Nightly Build 12.0a1 as of this writing).

Yep.

Oddly enough when I was redirected to the Silverlight page it stated I already had this version installed. Go figure.

Winamp

Umaromc reviewed on 02 Jan 2012
After ALL THESE YEARS I still can't use WinAmp skins or plugins.

It's a rudimentary media player at best.

This is NOT WinAmp but "WinAmp Sync" and is more geared towards Android device users whom want to sync their audio media between their device and Macs.

Also, here's a clip of their End User License Agreement (note that Nullsoft is a subsidiary of AOL);

"NULLSOFT END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR THE WINAMP SOFTWARE

WELCOME! YOU MAY USE THE WINAMP SOFTWARE AND APPLICATIONS ONLY ON THE CONDITION THAT YOU AGREE TO ABIDE BY ALL OF THE TERMS IN THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL BE GIVEN THE OPTION OF INSTALLING ADDITIONAL THIRD PARTY OFFERINGS. TO USE SUCH THIRD PARTY OFFERINGS YOU MUST AGREE TO ANY ADDITIONAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR SUCH THIRD PARTY OFFERINGS THAT ARE APPENDED BELOW THE WINAMP PLAYER LICENSE AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ALL OF THE TERMS FOR SELECTED THIRD PARTY OFFERINGS PLEASE RETURN TO THE DOWNLOAD MANAGER AND UNCHECK ANY THIRD PARTY OFFERINGS CHECKED. CLICKING THE ACCEPTANCE BUTTON BELOW INDICATES YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS OF THE WINAMP PLAYER LICENSE AGREEMENT AND THE TERMS OF THE LICENSE AGREEMENTS FOR ANY THIRD PARTY OFFERINGS YOU HAVE CHECKED OFF IN THE DOWNLOAD MANAGER.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING YOUR COMPUTER SETTINGS

PLEASE NOTE THAT CERTAIN FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THE WINAMP CLIENT AND THIRD PARTY COMPONENTS MAY CHANGE YOUR COMPUTER SETTINGS.  YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DECLINE THESE CHANGES AS PART OF YOUR INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTWARE.

DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS, YOU WILL BE PROMPTED TO INSTALL THE SOFTWARE, Winamp Remote, Winamp Toolbar, the Winamp Orgler application and the eMusic icon AND YOU WILL BE PROMPTED TO CHANGE SOME SETTINGS IN YOUR COMPUTER.  You will have a choice whether to install the software and whether some settings will be changed on your computer. You will also have a choice whether Winamp reports anonymous usage statistics to us,which we use to improve Winamp. When Winamp Remote starts, it will automatically scan your computer for audio files and create a list of those files, which will be used to enable the remote service. This version of Winamp Remote will automatically create a report for Nullsoft.

IF YOU OPT TO INSTALL THE EMUSIC PROMOTIONAL ICON, YOU CONSENT TO THE DOWNLOAD AND INSTALLATION OF ONE OR MORE ICONS ON YOUR COMPUTER'S DESKTOP THAT LINK TO INFORMATION ABOUT THE ICONS, SOFTWARE OR EMUSIC SERVICE AND/OR A REGISTRATION PAGE FOR EMUSIC'S INTERNET BASED MUSIC SUBSCRIPTION BASED SERVICE AND/OR OTHERWISE PROVIDE PERIODIC REMINDERS TO YOU IN THE FORM OF "POP-UP" NOTICES ON YOUR COMPUTER'S DESKTOP."

I tried it for a few minutes then hunted down everything having to do with "WinAmp" and "Nullsoft" and trashed them...

LIMBO
Umaromc commented on 26 Dec 2011
Does not work with my PS3 controller which I use for other games (Batman, DiRT 2, etc) even though it supposedly supports controllers... otherwise this is a really good puzzle platformer. I haven't been this entertained in this genre since Oddworld and Oddworld 2 on the PSOne.

Firefox

Umaromc reviewed on 22 Dec 2011
• Super fast browser, but then again so is my computer (2.66GHz MacPro, what, you need much faster for browsers?) and I'm not going to waste my time going through comparative speed tests to prove it to myself... [running] those tests will have wasted more of my life than what seconds I save come the end of the year

• Has Add-Ons in number and breadth of usage no other browser can touch

• Can be configured and tweaked using about:config the way no other non-Mozilla-based browser can

• Disabling Compatibility Check all of my Add-Ons work just fine using the Nightly Builds, which is at 12.0a1 as of this writing

• Scores 100 on that Acid3 test people have cried over

• Works and works well and I don't think version numbering is enough to have me navigate to macupdate.com to leave a negative review, Firefox checks for its own updates like much software is enabled to do today... let it Self Update and get on with your life. Think version numbering is enough to switch browsers? You've probably been using another browser for awhile now anyway.

X-Plane
Umaromc commented on 05 Dec 2011
Graphic Card support:
http://wiki.x-plane.com/X-Plane_10_Graphics_Card_Support

http://www.x-plane.com/x-plane-10-system-requirements/

X-Plane 10 requires, at the *minimum*,

a 2 GHz, dual-core CPU,
2 GB of RAM, and
a DirectX 9-capable video card with 128 MB of on-board, dedicated video RAM (VRAM). See link for compatibility and graphics cards.

However, *for the best experience*, we recommend the following:

a 3 GHz, multi-core CPU (or, even better, multiple processors),
4 GB of RAM, and
a DirectX 10-capable (DX11 preferred) video card with 1 GB of on-board, dedicated VRAM.

X-Plane will take advantage of as many cores or distinct processors as you can afford. Having 16 cores split among 4 CPUs is not required by any means, but Version 10 would be able to use every one. No more than 4 GB of RAM is necessary, but the more VRAM you have, the better–X-Plane 10 can easily use 1.5 GB of VRAM at the maximum settings.

Glider

What I'm not getting is that this publisher's website, "softdorothy", doesn't mention the author's name and the AUTHOR'S website, http://homepage.mac.com/calhoun/Glider%20PRO.html states that Glider PRO is FREE with links to downloads for the OS X and OS 9 versions.

You can play for free online as well since one Mark Arenz teamed up with Calhoun, the game's owner after Cassidy & Greene went under, to create a FREE, Flash-based version; http://www.ridiculopathy.com/games.php?gamename=glider

TotalFinder
Umaromc had trouble on 04 Sep 2011
Mac Pro 2009/ OS X 10.7.1/ Radeon HD 5870

The problem beguiling me is loading discs in the SuperDrive (either, I've two) and having them not appear on the desktop and freeze up any attempt to read loaded devices to unmount/force eject (ie; Disk Utility or the Eject pulldown button in the menu bar)... I couldn't even shut down without the process freezing up–the screen would turn grey with the rotating bars and never shut down–forcing me to hold the Power button to force shutdown. This subsequently would give me hard drive file count errors any time I ran Verify Disk which I'd have to fix via Single User Mode. After watching how the Finder would refresh after login after Total Finder loaded I decided to try uninstalling Total Finder. I now have no problems with discs showing up. None.

To help troubleshoot I was perusing Console.app logs but haven't found anything useful. Will post further results later, God willing

Stellarium
UmarOMC had trouble on 07 Jun 2007
Stellarium 0.9.0, Universal
2007-06-06, r2229+macosx support

This is the really final release build of Stellarium 0.9.0.

INSTALLATION

1. You need to be running Macosx 10.4, preferably not 10.4.7. Drag the Stellarium.app icon from this .dmg window to your mac, and double click on it there to run it.

2. You don't need anything else for this build, it is all bundled inside.

3. If you had an earlier version of Stellarium set to start in full-screen mode, you want to remove your earlier configuration file. As listed in the Known Issues section, this version of Stellarium does not run very well when started in full-screen mode. Simply move the file:

~/Library/Preferences/Stellarium/config.ini

(That is: in your home directory, the Library directory, then the Preferences directory, then the Stellarium directory, the file called "config.ini")
to another location, or to the trash. Stellarium will copy a new config.ini file that starts in windowed mode.

4. An issue with mis-directed shared libraries discovered for the Intel architecture has been resolved.

ADDITIONAL STARS

There are four star catalogs included with the build, and additional star catalogs available from the Stellarium website, the "Extra-data-files" package. Each star catalog file listed there you wish to add to the stars available can be placed in:

~/Library/Preferences/Stellarium/stars/default

Up to catalog 6 has been tested on a PPC iBook with 750mb RAM, and there was something of a performance hit. The more RAM and the faster processor you have, the more stars catalogs you will be able to load.

KNOWN ISSUES

0.9.0 right now cannot *start* in full-screen mode. It can start in windowed mode and toggle back and forth to fullscreen mode. This seems to have to do with OpenGL and Qt, and it will be investigated in future releases.

The video mode list of the config screen has no options in it, the switch to Qt has made that display obsolete. It will be resolved later.

About half the time when quitting, Stellarium will crash on glDeleteTextures. It will show a "The application Stellarium quit unexpectedly" dialog. This does not seem to hurt anything, but there is an order of destruction that needs to be corrected in future releases.

ATI cards in Macs are known to not support point sprites properly. If you run Stellarium, but don't see any starts whatsoever, edit ~/Library/Preferences/Stellarium/config.ini, add this line:

flag_use_gl_point_sprite = false

to the [projection] section.

This build does not include all possible star catalogs. Details about how to download additional star catalogs separately and make the available to Stellarium will be forthcoming.

There is no audio support in this build.
