Delicious Library

Thermidor reviewed on 09 Jan 2009
I don't know why this is hyped so much. It looks nice, and works okay. Or it did. The 2.05 Leopard version has taken several steps backward. It slows things down, it forces crap on you that I've never wanted or needed, and it takes things away that I actually liked.

Suddenly the sidebar is gone, and it's all at the bottom. Certainly no more convenient. Why wouldn't they give you the choice where it appears, if they felt they HAD to move something to the bottom?

The reviews are intrusive, and very irritating. I don't need a review for something I OWN. Why would I care what other people say about something I'm no longer in the market for?

Suddenly it's very difficult to change the cover art. I have no idea why the ease of version 1 is gone. It's bizarre. I'm stuck here trying to figure out a pattern in its behavior, and coming up blank. Jpegs dragged from the desktop will work, but god forbid you mis-position it. There's no undo. Before, you could just delete the cover art by selecting it in the sidebar. Simple. That's gone now. Charming.

I don't like the dark bezel info that appears when you scroll. A rectangle appears when you scroll past a certain rate, right in the center of the field, right where you'd like to focus. Why isn't this an option, rather than a forced "gift"? Thanks for making it annoying to scroll. How many hundreds of programs manage to give a scroll function without some stupid visual cheat sheet?

Irritating, all of it. I wouldn't buy this again. I'll be checking out the competing programs.

I agree with many here who are saying it's just eye candy. This is an expensive program that seems to spend as much on hype as on development.

Saft
Thermidor commented on 07 Jan 2009
I loved Saft when I began using it a few years ago. Loved it, used it, couldn't do without it for the few days after each Safari update. Then, somehow, it got harder to figure out how to get Saft updates. Dead links, self-referring link loops, vague terminology that left things more confusing than ever...

I had to repeatedly email the developer just to find where I needed to go. Like others commenting here, I was informed my email address wasn't valid. After emailing the developer, I would receive some ultra-brief reply with a link that would would magically work one time and one time only. Eventually, no reply came, and I realized I was getting angry at just the thought of spending more attention and time trying to contact the guy.

This was all so I could get ONE convenient function not provided by other programs: the "Add Bookmark Here" add-on at the bottom of each bookmark menu.

How many programs are able to update without these insane runarounds? It's clearly not that hard to do. Yet this guy has created this nearly impenetrable system of hoops and challenges, completely backward and needlessly frustrating for hundreds of people.

I now use Glims. I uninstalled Saft a few months ago, and just did without the Add Bookmark Here function. Now I notice the Glims team has incorporated that as well. Thank God. Now Saft is merely a magnificent negative example, showing how to totally screw up something that actually worked well. Good riddance.
