New version 5.0 installed and running beautifully on PowerBook G4 running Leopard. Noticeably quicker and smoother in my setup than 4.0 was (and it wasn't bad). I am running it by itself so I've not had the configuration issues others are reporting here... but it had no problem with any of the bookmarks, settings, and preferences of version 4 when upgraded. Also running it in my wife's Sawtooth system running Tiger with no problems. Major kudos to the developers for keeping perfectly viable PPC Macs going!
I also had the crash on startup issue with Safari 4.1 on Tiger/PPC, and I finally found the fix, at least the one that worked for me, courtesy of a poster over on another site:
I was ready to pull out what's left of my hair over this, but this fixed the problem immediately, and now Safari 4.1 and all plugins are working fine.
Oddly enough, I had no problems at all with an installation of S.0 on my PowerBook G4/1.67.
To clarify, the 4.1 installation was on a G4 tower, dual 500 Mhz, running Tiger. The 5.0 (not "S.0" as I mistyped) installation was on the PowerBook, running Leopard.
On my Mac (PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz) none of the iterations of VLC 1.1.0 will play several different file types, specifically .m4v and .avi. All videos in these files types appear as scrambled video with green diagonal lines. The audio plays properly. Since two-thirds of my video library are encoded in these formats (.mp4's play properly), VLC 1.1.0 is unusable to me. All formats play nicely in 1.0.5.
I'll be checking in the VLC forums to see if anyone else is having these issues.

Had the startup problem with 10.5.8. I tried everything in above article with no joy.
Found this on the Apple Web Site and it worked for me and other people having the problem...
CT plugin seems to cause problem. I did not even know it was installed on my system.
Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
/Library/Application Support/Conduit
/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
/Library/Receipts/.pkg
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
/Users//Library/Application Support/Conduit
