What can I say, it doesn't get any better than this. Any developer would be priviledged to be able to work with the Panic development team.

Pixelmator

Not sure why everyone keeps comparing this to Photoshop. If anything it's a step up from Preview. That is by no means meant to be a critisism, but comparisons to Preview are far more appropriate than comparisons to Photoshop! It can do a variety of useful things that Preview can't which helps to justify the cost as a basic low-cost image editor.

The pace of development of this app has been fairly slow for a while and the developers don't seem particularly keen to cater to frequently demanded requests on their forum. That is both a good and a bad thing. It'll be interesting to see what they have in store for version 2.0. No doubt they'll be rolling in it now based on their MAS success so they should be able to hire a few programmers and do some pretty cool things.

Solitaire Forever

Simonm reviewed on 16 Dec 2010
3 or 4 years ago I thought the OpenGL interface was kind of cool, now it just looks tacky to the max!  The solitaire on Windows 7 actually looks much nicer in my opinion and has a nicer layout that is easier to play than this game.  The background animations were always hideous overkill.

You can't argue that the sheer number of solitaire variants is impressive and based on what the developer wrote here I'm sure they're all well researched and implemented.  I think the asking price is fair for this many unique games but unless the user interface gets a major overhaul and refresh then I can't see myself playing it any more, even though I bought a license.  I'll try to find another nicer looking and more civilised Mac solitaire app.

We're well past the stage of being impressed by 3D for the sake of it!  And it's not a bad thing to read Apple's user interface guidelines either.  3D and animations can be used if they provide valuable visual cues but I can't see why a card game needs to be entirely 3D.  Maybe consider replacing OpenGL with (limited) core animation for an updated look and feel and breath fresh life into a dying Mac app.

Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery
Simonm commented on 02 Jun 2010
Epic fail. After letting the scanner run overnight and saving the scan results, there is no way I can find to reload those results after I've quit the application. What a joke. This looks like a very poorly written and buggy piece of Mac software. I'm now trying Data Rescue, which looks much better.

FileMaker Pro

Simonm reviewed on 10 Apr 2010
This company seems to be copping a lot of flack for their pricing, but I actually think $299 is pretty reasonable. I've only been testing it for a couple of weeks but am pretty impressed so far by its speed, stability, and feature set.

If you're considering spending $99 on Bento, I'd strongly advise against wasting your money on a rubbish product. If possible, you'd be better to stretch your budget and get a proper robust database with great data transforming and import/export features. Filemaker even comes with templates for things like CD and movie libraries.

For me, Filemaker seems to fill a need left vacant by spreadsheet software like Excel, and the even more limited Numbers.

It seems there were download and registration problems early, so maybe they underestimated the popularity of the trial. A 30 day unrestricted trial gives you plenty of time to asses it also.

Thanks Espiridion, I'll check it out. I'm hesitant to buy FileMaker now that it's been out a while because as soon as I do they're guaranteed to release a Mac App Store version and halve the price or something!

Actually there was a deal where if you bought FileMaker Go for the iPad or iPhone then they'd give you a pretty hefty discount and that appears to have ended so there must be something around the corner I hope.

MagicPrefs
Simonm commented on 13 Feb 2010
Sorry if I seemed unnecessarily angry, but as I tried to explain MagicPrefs seemed to be active, despite saying that it was innactive. You might want to look into this. I am quite happy to take screen capture movies to prove it.

MagicPrefs
Simonm commented on 12 Feb 2010
WARNING! Avoid this update! Without warning it istalls another Pref pane called MagicMenu that screws up your track pad! It took me a while for me to figure out why my trackpad was f*&#ing up! Turning it off didn't seem to matter as it was still screwing it up (yes I was restarting many times)...after restart it appeared to be OK but then something was causing MagicMenu to turn on and it WASN'T me!!! Deleting it didn't matter either because MagicPrefs just installs it again every time...i.e. you CAN'T use MagicPrefs now without it installing MagicMenu and screwing up your trackpad...WTF!?! If I wanted MagicMenu I would have downloaded it and installed it myself.

EPIC ANGRY AND UNCOOL!!!

By "causing it to turn on" I mean that it was still reporting itself to be turned off, but the very unhelpful functionality was obviously working. Both are now sent to the trash, which is disappointing cause MagicPrefs was very cool!

Won't install under Snow Leopard without having Rosetta installed. I'm not installing Rosetta just because this company can't release a reletively recent installer...it's not that hard. Didn't even get to try the software hence the 1-star rating.
