EVE Online

qaitakalnin reviewed on 07 Nov 2007
I was always a bit curious about this game, although I never had a computer capable of running it natively. Having played it previously, I was highly interested in the Mac version, even if it was merely a wrapper around the original Windows version.

Sadly, the game has proven completely unusable for me. In the first few minutes of designing a character, I was disconnected three times and crashed another two. When I finally got into the game with a character, I crashed again with a runtime error.

Although others are having a good time right now with it, it's my feeling currently that I was trying to run an alpha version of a product, not a final release. Perhaps a future version will do better.

Ukelele

qaitakalnin reviewed on 10 May 2006
Ukelele is quick to use and easy to understand. Without having to read any documentation, I got everything done. While such a statement may not be true for all users, I feel comfortable in saying that the learning curve will be small for most.

This application has allowed me to create custom keyboard layouts for my linguistics work. Since I use old languages (such as Old English or Old Norse) and the International Phonetic Alphabet often, I'm required to use so-called "nonstandard" characters regularly. Now I can type these things without a hitch. Many thanks to the developer!

All we need now is a Universal version.

SafariStand

I've been using SafariStand since its pre-1.0 days. I must say, I love it. Its ability to show header information was the main reason why I loved it so much. Now the sidebar only makes it better.

Great job!

Taco HTML Edit

Qaitakalnin reviewed on 13 Aug 2005
This has been absolutely essential in my work as a designer. As a person who works with the standards from the W3C (http://www.w3.org/), I find it to be best when you code by hand. All of those programs out there that let you produce the layout and then give you the code tend to output rather terrible HTML or XHTML. Doing it yourself not only lets you make sure that you're code is proper and well done, but it also allows you to acquire an excellent knowledge in how everything works.

Taco HTML Edit may not have the most numerous or amazing features, but it gets the job done. It's quick to launch and doesn't interfere with my work when I'm fiddling away with my latest project.

I must say, the developer has been quite useful for me. When he was working on PHP support in a beta version, I encountered a bug that crashed the program every time. Unfortunately, the thing that crashed it was the editing of a single line of code in my template file. I notified him and, in the next version to be released, the problem was fixed. Can't beat support like that.

I hope to see this project continue to mature. I would love to see support for more markup languages, such as XSLT. Generic tag colouring for unsupported languages would be awesome if specific languages cannot be supported. I would also like to see colouring for CSS.

With or without these features, however, I am nonetheless pleased with this program.

NewsFire

Qaitakalnin reviewed on 07 Nov 2004
This program has a gorgeous interface, but that doesn't solve its other problems. It's inability of sort things by groups is downright horrible. It is sometimes nice to get the newly updated feeds at the top of the list, but that also makes it impossible to know where a feed will be located in a list. Importing several hundred feeds from an OPML file also causes the program to beachball for several minutes, although I understand that it has to traverse huge amounts of data when a user does such a thing. And, finally, its lack of support for Atom is a major problem for me. A large portion of the sites I visit only offer Atom 0.3 feeds.

Development does seem promising, though. I'll definitely look at this application at a later date. But until it's a little more mature, I'll be staying with NetNewsWire 2.0.
