iPhotoSync
Pxquim commented on 28 Oct 2010
This application would become incredibly useful if it could offer Aperture photos for sync to iPhoto (1-way). Right now I have no reasonable way to share Aperture photos with the rest of the family.

StoryMill

In an incredible attack of dumbness, the Mariner Software web site requires a valid email address before allowing you to download the software. It was faster to download the software through MacUpdate than to jump through the Mariner Software hoops.

Papers
Pxquim commented on 17 Feb 2010
After working with Papers for a short time, I find that the program already does a few things very well. If the metadata is filled, then it is a beautifully efficient way to browse over scholar papers. But...

1) I can't get the ACM and IEEE sources to work properly, which makes the "match" functionality less useful than it should be. Probably for the same reason, the "recent papers" feature is often way off the mark.

2) There is no easy way to store a blog post without converting it to PDF first.

3) Notes in papers seem an afterthought. They seem fully hidden behind their paper while, in fact, my notes will become more important (for me!) than the paper itself, and should be a major entry point for browsing and searching.

So, although Papers tries to be the "ultimate archive", it is not the "ultimate research assistant", especially if you are no longer in academia and your sources go beyond published papers.

Yummy FTP
pxquim commented on 03 Dec 2008
Very fast at analyzing large hierarchies with hundreds of folders; it figures out that there is nothing to synchronize in a few seconds (if you allow "ls-R" in the preferences).

Uploads reliably without failing in the middle or skipping files.

Upgrading from Cyberduck, which somehow managed not to upload over 1000 files scattered over several folders.

Finally, the price is right for such an utility.

Sound Studio
pxquim had trouble on 27 Aug 2009
I'm ripping LPs, so I have a 15-30 minute sound recording. To remove "pops", I use the "Interpolate" filter over very small durations. If I do a lot of such edits, the App starts to look confused (for example, the display does not seem to update correctly) and eventually crashes.

The last time the app crashed when I tried to save the file. The OS later recover 248 .caf files, so perhaps I did over 200 edits?

This is on a iBook G4 1.0MHz with 768MB RAM, recording through a Griffin iMic.

Why am I complaining here? Well, trying to report the issue to Freeverse support using their Web form results in the error "Your message did not clear our spam filter". So, think twice before buying if you ever need support.
