Last night Firefox 7 installed itself without asking me. This morning, it installed 7.01, again without asking or giving me the chance to quit. I find this behaviour highly intrusive and downright rude, and I am considering switching to another, less despotic browser.
In fact, I am considering giving it a low rating just for this “feature” alone.
I do not appreciate applications that attempt to "call home" without my knowledge or permission. Mergemill is included in this lot. There is not even a preference panel to see who is being contacted, or to give you the option of turning this "feature" off.
Such unacceptable behaviour only ensures the app goes straight to the trash. Goodbye!
I have HoudahSpot, which is great for its own merits, but there is something about FAF which totally agrees with my way of thinking. It's the way found data is presented, allowing me to quickly get to what I want without sifting through hundreds of files all over the place. It's a real joy to use.
I used to use DF in OS8, and a couple of years ago I re-bought it via a MU bundle. But I have not installed it on my machine for 2 reasons:
1. Contrary to opinions here, the MacOS X Save Dialogue has similar features. It has your favourite folder list to the left, where you can drag folders and store them as favourites while in save mode, just like in DF. It has your Recent Places to the end of the menu (when menu is collapsed) just like DF. You can browse in 3 different type of views using command-1, 2 or 3. You can navigate using the command+arrow keys. You can get to the desktop using shift-command-D, to Applications using shift-command-A, to Home using shift-command-H, and geeks can go to any folder using shift-command-G . You can search for a specific places, locally or globally, through the search field just as in DF. You can also save that search without having to close the dialogue. You can copy the title of a shown file just by clicking on it, as in DF. You can create a new folder while in save mode by using command-N and entering a name (I believe just like DF). If you want to navigate to an already open folder in the Finder, go to the Finder and drag its folder icon (in its window) to the open Save dialogue box. Admittedly, DF does all this more elegantly, but it's not like they can't be done at all through the OS.
2. My second and most important reason my DF copy is still on the shelf is that it adds to a list of utilities that demand system memory. When I upgrade my station (and memory) I plan to happily install DF. Until then the Finder is sufficient in taking care of navigating for me.
1. Multiple ref string entries into the search-field do not produce the respective text in the window. The page remains blank.
2. Bookmarks with multiple refs, which are given a title and saved show up in the sidebar often without the title. To get the title shown, the bookmarks must be dragged out and back inside their folder.
Regarding the ref search-string, I think I found that what causes the problem is related to entry format. Below are 2 examples, the second works correctly, the first omits Ro 8:15-17 and 2Co 13:14 :
- When Notes are dragged into Folders, the original note remains where it was, creating thus duplicates.
- Editing both Notes and Folders is neither easy or obvious
Having said this, I am very happy with the direction and progress of MacSword. I am spending less time with OnlineBible and more with MS. Great work!
This version requires a licence upgrade for pre-v3.5 licensees.
This is strange, given that we are not up to v4 yet. Be prepared to downgrade after trial period runs out.
There are some serious issues with this version. All files were lost. I was able to recover part of my work by using TimeMachine but it seems the more recent work is gone.
Bookmarks are unpredictable. Problems include:
–Inability to click-select and highlight bookmarks (intermittent)
–Inability to change bookmark stacking order (intermittent)
–When bookmark stacking order is moved, the old position is retained resulting in 2 bookmarks.
I am not sure if this will be entered as a new comment, or under my previous one, as indented. In response to the developer: I would like to help any way I can by submitting the details you ask. Email me with details.

That's nice, but unfortunately it tells me nothing about the product.

Both the above occur intermittently.

3. Bookmark folders are occasionally turned into bookmarks.
4. In field input with long ref strings some of the refs are omitted, eg. Mt 3:16,17 returns only Mt 3:16

Mt 28:19 Ro 8:9,14-17 2Co 13:14 1Pe 1:2 Jude 1:20,21
Mt 28:19, Ro 8:9,14-17, 2Co 13:14, 1Pe 1:2, Jude 1:20,21
This first method is legitimate, and it would be nice if it worked without the need for commas.
