Back on Windows, I was a heavy user of Rar compression and a big fan of WinRar. This post shows how to use an Automator workflow with an applescript to tell the command line Rar executable above what to do: so you'll be able to simply right-click on any file or folder & create a RAR file. http://stuffforlife.blogspot.com/2009/03/data-compression-in-mac-os-x-how-to.html
I used this to convert Flac files only to Apple Lossless or to high quality mp3. It worked flawlessly and fast in either type of conversion. Highly recommended if this is what you desire.
I just tried updating to version 4.6 on my Macbook running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and it would not install no matter what I did. I even tried a clean install by uninstalling the previous version of Cocktail but that had no effect. Each time I had to force quit Cocktail after installing it into my applications folder and then trying to open it up for the first time. I have a 2 GHz Macbook with 4 GB DDR3 memory running Snow Leopard.
Disregard the above trouble as for some reason after I did a restart, it worked. Normally, I would expect a program to inform me that a restart was necessary---Apple's always does.
