Spotify

Noivad reviewed on 12 Nov 2011
Spotify is nice and everything, but it lacks a few features that encourage me to use it for anything more than a novelty and to occasionally listen to artists I am unfamiliar with if they have them.

The problems are 4 fold: first the selection is great — if you like mainstream music. I general I do not, so there's one strike. The "what's new" feature is useless to me. So, I'm not going to be discovering any new artists here.

The second problem is that I can't just set it to start playing and decide what to play next based on a seed or artists like pandora. You must queue every track unless you wish to listen to predefined categories, which are pretty broad considering how music sub-genres have sub-genres now. If I want to queue up a random list I have to make it in iTunes and access it through spotify. So, instrad of using a middleman, I just use iTunes' DJ and Genius features.

The third problem is that the advertising spots do not play nicely with my setup that I'll admit is much more locked down that most people's. So if you too have tightened security of your OS X machine since pulling it out of the box or installing it you too might experience the following: You'll listen for 2 or 3 songs an ad will try to play but fail to play or play and fail to hand off control back to your queue.

Fourth: Unless you upgrade you are limited to no mobile streaming and 10 hours. Sure this is fair, but no mobile? But considering that Pandora has mobile for nothing and it is supported by advertisements that don't interrupt the feed.

Fifth: If you want to share with friends you have to ope nup your Facebook account to Spotify and they get complete access to your data — music related or not.

With all these caveats I cannot at this time recommend Spotify as more than just a novelty service/app platform. If they fix the bugs and add logical and customizable features, then I'll revisit this review. Until then I'll remain with the Pandora/iTunes setup I have now.

World of Warcraft

Noivad reviewed on 16 Oct 2011
I played for about 9 months. At first it was incredible -- I played day and night sometimes on weekends and holidays. It was very addictive. I worked my way to the top then started raiding with a guild. All was great, and I made a few friends.

The pros were: the graphics, beauty, creativeness, and fluidity.
*Boss fights have to be carefully orchestrated.
*PvP between equally matched (and closely geared) players is a ton of fun. Especially when you go toe-to-toe with someone playing the same class as you.

A few months later, my best friend I made in the game left because another person in my guild didn't like her and she moved her character to another server. I had other friends in the game, but our play schedules were incompatible. So, I rarely saw them. I continued playing for a few months, but lost all interest in what had become a grind.

I made about 6 characters, and frequented different servers, but with so many people, I rarely played with the same person twice.

The biggest flaw: Essentially, you have a Multiplayer game with no community unless you join a guild and play enough to get on raids. They're very competitive and there's a pecking order. It's a bit like a job at hat level: you have to show up for raids regularly, and establish your worth to get in on popular guild raids. If you have a loser guild, then you lack the fun of playing with friends. So it's an all or nothing thing, usually.

So, with no sense of community, the game's flaws started getting more annoying.
*your combat was just pushing sequences on button at the right time and watching meters refill.
*The skills required to play are very low the more powerful you get, or with certain classes. So, the game gets less interesting. There's a running joke about people "rolling their face across the keyboard and getting a kill."
*Boss fights (while carefully planned) become a boring routine. And if one person messes up in the fight, the entire party can wipe. Meaning a long run back to the body from the closest graveyard.

*You're on a gear treadmill. The best equipment is a grind to get, and some very rare items are like slot machine jackpots, which is frustrating.
*Without the best gear, you're a sitting duck in PVP.

*Too many of the same type of quests: "kill X number of creatures." or "collect X number of this item dropped by dead creatures at random intervals." some are "run here, talk to this person, then run there talk to another person... etc." and some are "escort this NPC along this route." Blizz addressed this by making more types of quests, but also made things easier, not necessarily more interesting.
*When there is an expansion the level cap rises, and all the gear you worked so hard to get becomes worthless.
*Nothing you do can permanently change the world. Kill the boss at the end of a dungeon and he'll be back for you and others to kill later.
*There are a ton of servers, meaning the player base is fractured. So, even if you find a friend that plays, you'll either have to start a new character on the same server as them (or vice versa) or play an expensive transfer fee.
*It's around $80 for 6 months of play at the best rate.

All in all, WoW is the best 3D MMORPG out there. But it can only hold your attention for so long, because while there's a ton of equipment, a vast world and some interesting storylines. It lacks community, permanent one time world altering events players can take place in, and a combat system that consists of just pushing a button and waiting to push the next one -- so no real skill is needed (except PvP with tactically talented players).

FinderPop

Noivad reviewed on 03 Oct 2011
I had FinderPop on all my macs back in the OS 8/9 days, and It was so great I sent Turly enough money for a few pints as thanks. He sent me a kind thank you and the rest is history. When OS X came out I missed FinderPop, but Turly (a former Apple Developer from what I remember) came back and enhanced an already enhanced contextual menu system.

Thanks again Turly... I think I owe you a few more pints. :)

Default Folder X

Noivad reviewed on 03 Oct 2011
If you want to save time and clicking around the open/save dialog boxes, buy this program. Here is why....

I have been using Default Folder X since before the "X" was added (meaning since OS 9 or earlier days). And it is one of the first extensions/utilities that I load on any new systems I get. It has survived many other finder enhancements I've used through the years and I consider it indispensable.

In short, it saves a lot of time by allowing you to navigate the open and save dialogs much quicker than you can do it without Default Folder. Even with no setup the "Recent Folder" menu speeds your navigation. Also, the ability to click on any open folder in the Finder also saves an incredible amount of time.

The integration with the OS is practically seamless, and the stability is amazing. Not once in the past 14 years has it ever crashed or caused a crash with frequent use throughout everyday. In the few cases where the OS was updated and an incompatibility was discovered Default Folder it refuses to load and let's you know why. And then it is usually a simple matter to go to the developer's site an update to the latest version.

Bottom Line: Power users, people who don't like to waste time or those that want an easier way to do things should do themselves a favor and buy this application. You will wonder how you ever lived without it. And I am wondering why Apple hasn't purchased the Application and integrated it into the Finder itself so everyone can enjoy the power of it.

Heh, make a claim about stability and pay for it later. I have to update this to say that the latest version of Vuze 4.7.0.0 has a bug problem with Default Folder. It will sometimes crash when opening a dialog to select where to save a downloaded file. I added Vuze to the exclude list and all is well, now. So, this is a first. I still highly recommend Default Folder X, and I'm chalking this problem up to Vuze.

Scrivener

Noivad reviewed on 03 Oct 2011
I had been looking for a good writing app that could also store URLs and allow me to write chunks of articles freeform and then reorganize them and polish them. It even allows you to "trash" pieces but still saves them in its own trash so you can go back to them later for reference or to salvage them.

I tried Mellel, which is good, but Scrivener uses a slightly different approach which is more in line with the way I would like to work. Not only that Scrivener is much more polished visually and includes a built in tutorial teaching you how to quickly ramp up to really use the application much faster than anything else with its feature set that I have seen.

At the current price of $45, I think it's a steal. I am very impressed by it and intend on buying it ASAP. In a word, "Wow!"

Usually I also have criticisms for applications, but in this case I have none, which is truly rare for me. I can't think of any more features to pack into this application. It is obvious the developer of this application built it so he would have a great writing tool at his disposal. I say this because it is often those that want to use the application to get their work done that not only include all the features they'd like, but also take the time to make them easy to use and continually polish the application.
Bottom Line: Scrivener puts practically everything else out there to shame.

TuneSpan

Noivad reviewed on 03 Oct 2011
I've tried practically all the library managers for iTunes out there, but this one is unique. It doesn't do anything you couldn't do yourself. However the fact that you simply select a folder, select files you would like to move to it and click "Span..." to execute your choices saves a great deal of time.

As you probably know iTunes is very inflexible as far as being able to split your media collection and put them in more than one huge directory or even move them from one drive to another without breaking all the links. iTunes is also not smart enough to relink files from the same album after you've located the first one. TuneSpan saves you from this grief and trouble. I wish this application existed years ago, as it would have saved me tens of man hours reorganizing my collection.

Add to that, TuneSpan is donation-ware and you've got something truly worthy of your donation. You have nothing to lose, just read the manual to understand what it does before you click "Sapn..." the first time. (But there is a handy undo ability too.)

There is room for improvement though, thus the 4 stars. I sent an email to the developer suggesting features that i'd would like to see this past weekend, but have yet to get a reply. A few are very simple and one is very complicated and might be out of scope of the goal of this program. Considering that this app isn't even at 1.0 status, I think it has a lot of great potential to really allow power users to control their media and organize it they way they want it to.

BBEdit

Noivad reviewed on 26 Aug 2011
Other have commented on specifics, and I'll not reiterate those points. So I'll give you a more general perspective.

I've used BBEdit since OS 8 days, and it always got better with each new version. Until now. All I can say is, "Ow ow ow!" I relegated BBedit to the background when I got Coda a few years back, but continued to use it for non-Editing&FTPing needs. I found a lot of feature very useful, but some of those are gone now. I feel like a light has gone out in the Mac Development community and that BareBones has lost their way. BBedit used to be a mainstay on my dock -- it's been replaced.

Some things have gotten progressively worse since 9.x came out. (like multi file search being a separate window)
But 10 sets the bar lower than ever. I realize the price is half of some editors and is meant to compete with the low end of the editing market and thus they didn't put time into implementing pro features. But if you think about it, people who rely on text editors are usually pros. All the novices are using SimpleText or free editors (such as TextWrangler) -- or worse, think that Word is a text editor.

So the bottom line is: if you're professional a 8.x or 9.x user do not upgrade. If you're looking for a decent editor and are not a pro, you might as well stick with TextWrangler. If you're focused on web development and have to FTP edited files, there's better tools out there! (see my other reviews)

Espresso

Noivad reviewed on 26 Aug 2011
I really wanted to like Espresso, I did, but I came from Coda, a more fleshed out editor/ftp/csseditor/etc. And while I think Espresso shows promise, I cannot recommend it over Coda because it lacks a few features that Coda has and is also a bit less intuitive to use.

Sure it's pretty, and looks sleek and modern, but without the usability and utility of other apps out there. I can't give more than 3 stars. Now it does have a features that Coda lacks, but they are outweighed by the lack of features compared to others.

To qualify my statements: I used it exclusively for about 3 weeks while updating and developing new features for an established site. I did not buy the license, but that didn't seem to really matter.

The bottom line is that I saved far more time using Coda and actually lost time using Espresso. Even after I was familiar with it I found myself working around some of its conveniences I didn't have the option to change. Thus it wasn't saving me the time. I might try it again when it hits 2.1 or 2.0.1, but for now I'll have to pass.

Coda

Noivad reviewed on 26 Aug 2011
I've been using coda for a few years now and it's made my life a lot easier. I used to edit in BBedit and then upload in Transmit. Then BBedit got FTP, so I thought I was set. But then I found Coda. Once I learned to set it up properly with all the paths (local and remote) set up, it was so incredibly easy to update my multiple sites I immediately bought it. I learned the ins and out of it and have really grown to love this app. It has saved me a ton of time, and Id buy it again. ($99 is not that much compared to BBEdit and Transmit combined.)

So, with that comes my criticisms:
#1: No code folding. It's been at least a year since I requested this feature. the devs replied, "Wait for Coda 2." that was a year ago.
#2: too easy to upload files to the wrong place because of lack of enough visual feedback. I could be editing on the server or the local copy and I sometimes mistake which I'm looking at. Also, without setting up paths, it's a chore to upload.
#3: The app should try to auto detect the proper paths to sync up if both directories are populated, and if it fails you should be able to navigate to each directory and click one button to edit your config file to fill in the path info for the site.
#4: Split pane could be easier to use. It's not very intuitive.
#5: I'd like to list local and remote directories side by side if I wanted to.
#6: I'd like to be able to have one window contain all the sites I'm working on and be able to control-tab through them rather than have to open separate windows.
