Tiger (OS X 10.4) might seem to have broken x-cd-roast, but it actually works fine.
Install as usual (the most recent version -- currently the Panther version).
Ignore the helper app for starting the program -- this doesn't work in Tiger (because of an Apple bug, apparently).
Start X11. (In Applications>Utilities).
An x-term (i.e. terminal in X11) window will appear.
In this window type '/usr/local/bin/xcdroast' (without the quotation marks). That will launch x-cd-roast.
Many thanks to the developer for the information. (The usual disclaimer: I am not associated with him in any way except that he answered the email I sent him asking for help.)
This is a fantastic application: it will make an exact copy of an audio CD. And it is free.
