Microsoft Office 2011

mika33 reviewed on 09 Feb 2012
I just finished to draft a 150 page document with a lot of tables and figures and even after 15 years of working with this SW I can only conclude:
MS Word on Mac gets worser with each release..
I am not talking about GUI elements, actually I like the ribons but basic stuff still does not work:

- picture inserting has and is still a try and error excersise, you never know where your graph will finally show up.
- table formatting, column adjustements can still keep you busy for hours despite the "templates".
- Cursors jump around in unpredicted ways, in page view Word is constantly "formatting" and "analyzing" your document (can drive you nuts)
- Inserting a list of figures replaces the regular TOC....

I could go on for ever....

I will consider now installing Parallels and use MS Word for Windows which seems to be better supported.

LibreOffice

mika33 reviewed on 09 Feb 2012
Once again I was trying for an escape route from MS Office which gets even worser on the Mac with the 2011 release.
Unfortunately, as with many attempts on OO or Neo before, there is simply no replacement for MS Word on the Mac - full stop. The problem is always not the reading but saving again in an MS format which either does not work at all or gives funny results in your "new" word file.
If you are not forced to work in an MS environement LibreOffice maybe great, as it cannot handle Word files its useless for me.

Blaming does not help. However I would blame all these "open" office alternatives to not consider enough the de-facto document standard i.e. MS Word. Whether you like it or not does not matter.
A SW company ignoring this simple fact is not better than MS. They just want to push users to use "their" standard (open or not does not matter either)

XBMC
mika33 commented on 18 Jan 2012
Trying no XBMC as Boxee is dead for my Mac Mini. However with all these MM frontends there are problem to access my UPnP server on my Synology NAS. Photos, Videos are not found or connection is broken...
I suspect this is a problem on the NAS but I wonder whether other users have similar problems?

BTW: Accessing NAS content via a normal file share is no problem..

Plex

Plex does not support external UPnP servers (like from my NAS) but rather gives you (yet another) server. All media content has to be present on local or mounted disks.
At least this is my observation after a quick test install..??

This might not be a problem for some users, for me its a show stopper.

MacFamilyTree

Again trying the new update with a hope for some improvements. This time its really disappointing. Not only that no automatic alignment and distribution features are provided for *multipage* outputs, the graphics really sucks!

- You cannot control the overall color schemes for any graph. Either you like it or edit manually for every box!

- The layout of the person boxes in all graphs waste a ridiculous amount of screen/paper space. For example if you want "profession" added in the output all word larger than ~10 characters are cut-off despite enough empty space to the right side of the box.

- Even in Edit mode no alignment aids, you cannot even resize several boxes at once.

Looks like this SW is getting worser with every update. Only good for people who like the eye candy...

Delibar

mika33 reviewed on 03 Nov 2011
After the 145. renewal of the Delicious API I had once again to upgrade my bookmark application and find one which is still usable.
Delibar does its job, searching is fast and effective. However there are some bugs which are somewhat bothering:
- Setting of labels sometimes leads to strange results. Instead of 2 labels "Mac", "OSX" sometimes you get "Mac:OSX" on your account.
- Bookmarks are not updated when the application starts, it only follows it strict update schedule defined in the preferences.

Boxee

mika33 reviewed on 03 Jun 2011
I tried them all, Plex, Centerstage.. non of them are perfect, nearly all of them are in an endless alpha/beta stage but Boxee is still the best and most stable MultiMedia solution for my MacMini.
It could deserve an update but the company has its focus now on their hardware...

MacFamilyTree

Yes this software has a nice graphical touch (as all applications from this company) but even with the tons of features (mainly to *input* data) I am missing an essential *output& feature:

- To print out a family tree as a nicely formatted book!

I wonder what people do once they finished their family database: all on the WeB? Having the perfect A0 poster plotter at home? I guess it is not so uncommon to expect an output nicely distributed over several pages with some SW, not User intelligence how to accomplish this without much effort.

So far all multi-page graphs have to be adjusted manually which can take ages for big families.

So very good job for the input, please do something about the output part!
