xGestures

matrixstylemac reviewed on 02 Feb 2006
I've been using this little app for a few months now and, I can't picture using a computer without it. I find myself trying to gesture when I'm on other peoples' computers. $5 is more than worth it, the freeware gesture apps I've tried don't come close.

FlyGesture

Try xGestures; a system pref pane that is completely customizable+no graphical representation. Doing what it's supposed to immediately is graphical representation enough (launching apps, closing windows, creating new windows, et cetera).

As an additional bonus, xGestures is compatible w/ 10.3 and 10.4 (two diff downloads, simple though) and is only $5.

Save the twenty bucks (minus five cents).

D-Vision

Ok, if you're on Tiger (10.4) or higher, DVDibbler won't work. And since D-Visions runs off of the same binaries (mplayer/mencoder) it runs at nearly the same speed. The overall user-friendlyness is almost that of DVDibbler. The speed on my Dual 2.5 G5 with D-Visions 3 (w/ 3gigs of Ram) is almost that of DVDibbler (back when i had 1gig of RAM) It's 2nd place in my book, but a close 2nd. In this case, #2 wins out because it WILL run on Tiger (hooray!).

DVDibbler

Ok, the fact that it doesn't include all of the necessary files from one download is kind of a hassel...i'll submit to that. but ALL of the necessary files (a WHOPPING 3, including DvDibbler) are located on the developers page. None of the links gave me ANY problems whatsoever. Once you install mencoder and mplayer, you can rip your movies at BLAZING speed. I'm ripping "The Final Cut" at the moment at almost 2x. Granted, I'm on a dual 2.5Ghz G5, but on my 1Ghz G4 iMac i sustained around .5-.75x (Both systems have 1GB DDR). The occasional error saying that no audio encoder is selected is a mystery to me. It happens now and again, but i just quit and relaunch DVDibbler and it seems to be fine. Happy ripping!
