Steam

Lightfootadv reviewed on 14 May 2010
The main steam app is pretty unstable on my 2009 mini, but it's early though, and I'm sure they'll work that out.

Portal does take at least 2-3 minutes to load, but I suspect it's running through some kind of crossover-like emulation, and not a full Mac app. It played fine though once on, and it worked with my Kensington mouse.

The Mac steam isn't perfect, but at least it seems like it'll be comparable in features to the PC version. It's a great start so far honestly, something like this has a lot of potential.

Overall I like it. I didn't try any of the betas, so the final v4 is a new experience for me. It does seem noticeably faster than v3. It also seems very stable.

The top sites feature isn't really something that important to me. Unlike at least Chrome's similar feature, top sites seems to load all of the listed sites in real-time, which takes several minutes, instead of just caching thumbnails from your last visit (which seems more logical). Kind of odd there isn't anyway to control how it works. It does however list when a site was updated though I guess.

The reload/stop button is gone, and instead there's a reload button on the right-hand side of the address bar, which seems unusual. It's in an annoying place now.

If I really had to make a suggestion about what feature I would most want would be dividers in the bookmark menu, or a Chrome-like download panel that would appear at the bottom of the window.

It's an improvement in performance though. I'm not unhappy I upgraded.

I'm pretty impressed overall with this program as a new page layout option. It reminds me of Pixelmator in early versions.

It is a functional program already. I could imagine someone being able to easily use it in day to day operations. There are some obvious oddities and overlooked features though, as with most newish software.

Character styles would be a very welcome addition, as well as being able to combine shapes, and custom page sizes. It also feels strange not being able to drag shapes out of the palette directly onto the page. Unless I'm missing it, you can also only save in IStudio format or PDF files. It would also be nice if there was one place to select the object and stroke colors together (instead of in separate places).

I look forward to the future development of the program.

I bought this through the MU promo (I'm sure a lot of people will be commenting on apps they just bought).

It does look a little old-fashioned, but I'm not sure that's a big problem. Features are generally more important. It can open and save into files I've never heard of before. It can do probably more things than I've even noticed so far.

One problem I noticed is that if you pick "vectorize" (something that sounds like an interesting feature) it opens a save as window. If you then push cancel when you get back to the program the tool palette is empty.

The save for web features are something I want to try out more throughly. I wonder how it compares to Imageready CS1. It has a live preview in the JPEG saving window, which is good.

It seems like an effective choice if you need something special, or if you don't want to shell out the $$$ for Photoshop/Imageready (or buy an upgrade just for Intel versions) and you can handle something smaller, lighter, and don't need certain PS features.

One big thing it would be nice to see added was the option to use the Mac OS X colorpicker. The fixed color palette would be nice in certain situations, but it would be nice to have some color sliders, etc.
