Media Inspector

I consider it improper developer etiquette to move a formerly free app to the App store and start charging for it. I would prefer that the developer release a new product at the App store, then include the information that the old product has been discontinued in favor of the new one, if that's the case. Ideally, a free product shouldn't be replaced with a commercial product, doing that compromises the integrity of the "free" software label.

Find Any File
Laine commented on 17 Jun 2011
I agree that this is a valuable product, but I'm unhappy that its status has changed so that it's no longer available for free. I would prefer that the developer announce that development for this product has ceased and that the same functionality as well as added features now exist in a new product. As documentation suggested, I did discover an action that appeared to remove the purchase requirement, but in the interest of good will, I don't intend to share it. Again, it's a great product, but please simply retire it and offer a different product if you find you need to require a fee.

Adobe Flash Player

Flash Player security update released today. So why does the installer fail with the message that a newer version is already installed?

Yes, that was it. I visited http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html to get help uninstalling, then installed the 10.2 update. Thanks.

AirPort Location
Laine commented on 13 Sep 2010
My previous post should be ignored. In my haste I failed to notice that Airport Location had been updated before responding to the blog item that appeared in my email inbox. I need to test the new version before answering. Apologies. Thanks.

AirPort Location
Laine commented on 13 Sep 2010
Unfortunately, no. AirPort Location still displays the message about turning on AirPort power, and does nothing further. I'm still setting my locations manually. I've tried uninstalling the latest using your instructions and reinstalling, but I still can't seem to make it work.

AirPort Location

Thanks for Airport Location!

I think it may be where I need for it to be or nearly there. I've been searching for an application such as this that could turn Airport on and switch to a location setting that reflects the new status simply when and always when I unplug the ethernet cable. I need it to change back when and always when I plug the cable back in. Sometimes the results are intermittent, but if I choose the first menu item again a time or two, the new status appears to be recognized and the proper actions performed.

0.60106 appears to be able to detect my location better than previous versions, but it appears that I'll have to remove all existing customization and start again to really test properly. For my current settings, it does things that I consider strange such as applying the correct snapshot without correctly determining the location when a location change is detected. Thanks again for continuing to work on fixes.

Pasteboard Recorder 3E

I find that with minimal effort, I can successfully manage this multi-clipboard utility. I've tried a lot of these, including commercial ones, and the current version of this one is my favorite. Maybe I don't ask enough from a multi-clipboard utility, but this one is just my speed. Thanks for making it available!

Apptivate
Laine tipped on 07 Apr 2010
Some script files' scripts may need to be modified to include the "activate" command near the beginning of run handlers so that they become frontmost when triggered. It's a scope thing. But I was quite pleased to discover that Apptivate does indeed trigger script files, not just scripts saved as applications.

DVD Imager
Laine had trouble on 31 Oct 2007
DVD Imager needs an update to work properly in Leopard, but in the meantime, here's an easy workaround.

Don't drop the VIDEO_TS folder onto DVD Imager's window. Instead, find the DVD Imager application icon in the Finder and drop it onto that.

DVD Imager
Laine had trouble on 07 Jul 2007
For most problems with DVD Imager, in all likelihood the content of the VIDEO_TS folder (or other content if you're using copy mode) is something DVD Imager can't handle.

Here are some ways to try to determine that.

Start by using a utility like Onyx to

1) Repair permissions.
2) Check preferences.
3) Clean caches.

Are there any DVDs/VIDEO_TS folders that DVD Imager can copy? If you've ever successfully used DVD Imager to make a DVD before, try inserting one you created with DVD Imager before or one that was created a different way, and try to perform the operation on the VIDEO_TS folder that exists there.

Monitor the tmp folder while DVD Imager is working. That may present a challenge. You should be able to locate that folder in the Finder by typing command-shift-g and entering "/tmp". Examine the files in the lelandtmploc just after DVD Imager begins working.

Look for a file called " dvdimagerlog" also in the "/tmp" folder. If you can, drag it out of there before DVD Imager deletes it when quitting, and tell me what's in it. If you have trouble dragging it, just select it as soon as it appears after you click Create in DVD Imager and press command-d to duplicate it. That way the original will be removed when DVD Imager quits but the duplicate will remain.

You might want to try testing the mkisofs executable which is the engine for DVD Imager. The documentation includes the command you need to type into the terminal, substituting your particulars for source, disk name, and destination.

If you put the DVD Imager application into the main directory of the boot drive, typing the following line precisely into Terminal and pressing return should result in a message telling you all the options that can be used for the mkisofs executable. If it doesn't, then there's some problem with the mkisofs executable on your system, and DVD Imager can't possibly work.

/DVD Imager.app/Contents/Resources/mkisofs

If you get the expected response, then try completing the command line using the command line sample included in the documentation.

Good luck!
