sharedSecrets
Knowhowe commented on 23 Jan 2012
I found myself with all manner of confidential stuff stored in my notebook app and thought I should finally do something about it.
A mooch around MacUpdate soon revealed SharedSecrets, which is absolutely perfect for my needs. And free too.
Thanks to the dev for it!

Stellar Drive Toolbox

Bit confused here. This software is advertised here as 'free' but apparently costs $99 for a single licence. Which is correct?

Shame about that. Wasted my time downloading the software and scanning my MBP (several hours), only to then be asked for a licence key. Cheers.
Shame, looks good but no way can I afford.

Starry Night

What ever happened to AfterDark anyway? I loved their screensavers, especially the one that featured a photo-realistic finger inside your Mac writing text of your choosing onto the steamed-up screen.
Very accomplished graphics for the day.
Last saw that running on my old Umax Mac clone.
I'd pay folding money to have it back.

Bamboozlers Magic
Knowhowe commented on 06 Jan 2012
I got this back from the dev:

"sorry... But Apple has some restrictions on its AppStore... All existing apps that do not support the Lion Sandboxing system may be sold until march 2012 in the AppStore. Then they will be deleted by Apple.

All existing apps that recieve updates by the developers must support this mechanism today. And we made an update, so it is not possible to go back... Sorry...

But we can recommend you the Lion upgrade! It's really great! There is so much more in it and under the hood that isn't described to the public!

Greetings and a happy new year
Jens Beuckenhauer"

And no, the App Store won't allow me to download it.

Why on earth does this not work in anything other than Lion??

TextSpline
Knowhowe commented on 02 Jan 2012
I fondly remember the After Dark screensavers that used to run on my Macs up to (?) OS 8 or 9- it was a long time ago. One module did this animated text very well and another featured a photo-realistic finger, writing the text of your choice on the inside of your misted-up screen.

Wonderful stuff for its time. What ever became of it?

I do like this quite a lot but the effect would be much more convicing with clouds and other atmospheric effects. Maybe next version?

Sparkbox
Knowhowe commented on 24 Nov 2011
Gave this a try as it seemed to be just what I was looking for to deal with my chaotic collection of archive images.

Felt right at home upon opening the app- very Mac- knew what to do straight away and cracked on importing my stuff.

However, very soon found the app to get slower and slower as the images went in- we're not talking thousands at this point, more like 300 or so- until the beggar pretty much refused to do anything but spin that beachball...

I also noticed that, once a few folders had been created, subsequent orders to create a new folder would result in that folder appearing in the previously-created one and then having to be dragged out and dropped onto the 'catergories' icon.. annoying but quickly fixed I guess.

So there we go. In the bin goes another experiment. Shame really, as this would have been great for my needs, and at the best possible price too! The thing's just not ready.

I emailed the dev while sparkbox was downloading, asking about the likely price out of beta. Better write again with a copy of these comments now!
