I'm a long time user of Synk Pro 6 and have put Synk Pro 7 through it's paces both as a beta tester and once a stable version was released.
I admit it took me a while to get used to the new paradigm adopted by Synk 7. As noted by others, Synk 7 removes some degree of control over when files are synchronized. However, there is an upside: my files are ALWAYS synchronized. I don't have to remember to run the program--it just happens!
As internet bandwidth continues to grow, I think this will be the trend most programs take. Indeed, there are already a number of services that use this model. It's just that these programs--Dropbox, SugarSync, ZumoDrive--tend to synchronize a smaller amount of files and they do it with a server. Synk 7 scales this model up and cuts out the server middle-man.
So, to those who are grappling with the new way Synk 7 runs, I'd recommend taking it for a spin with a few, non-critical files. Play with it for a few days and get used to the way it works. I think many will be pleasantly surprised.
I'd also add that the service I've received in my many years as a Synk user is outstanding. The developers are sharp, helpful, and willing to have a frank discussion with me about a question or feature request. This is exactly why I like supporting indie software.
This is an excellent 2D graphing program for those looking for a native Mac program. It supports copy/paste data import from spreadsheet programs and delimited text files. There are also several ways to create graphs from the command line using a template--very useful for batch/scripting.
The interface is well designed and easy to navigate. The program is frequently updated and the developer is incredibly responsive.
The program does what it's designed to do and it does it well. A very happy user!
I have used a variety of VNC clients and this is the slickest, most feature rich one out there. The management of multiple screens, smart zoom, and ability to call the program from scripts put it heads above the rest. The price is a bit steep, but the renewable free license is very generous. I was happy to purchase a license to support a great product.
A solution for keychain issue I mentioned below:
After several emails with the developer, it became clear that the issue was with my keychain permissions. I tried to run Keychain First Aid from the Keychain Access program and was told that my keychain did not have the right permissions. On a hunch, I fired up the terminal and checked the permissions on the file ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain. The owner was set to root rather than my user name. This was easy to fix using chown. After that, Garage Sale worked just fine!
I am still not sure how the permissions were changed. Perhaps the 10.5.4 update I installed yesterday?
I, too, really want to like this application and was disappointed by it's speed, or rather lack there of, compared to Preview/Skim for even a small PDF file. I had problems with the PDF displaying funny at times, as well.
In the meantime, I use the FREE program FormulatePro. It's only on version 0.4, so there aren't a lot of bells and whistles, but you can type on forms and it's FREE. Very happy.
Hot, hot, hot!! This is gorgeous software and, though still beta, was the final factor in me getting rid of my home made (windoze) media PC and investing in a Mac. When this software matures a bit, it will crush FrontRow. Love it!
This is a great illustration/SVG application. I acquired it through the MacUpdate promo this summer and it has turned out be a gem. I am a scientist and use Intaglio to touch up graphs that are exported from various graphing programs. Intaglio is the only application thus far (besides Illustrator) to import the PDFs generated from these programs correctly. I have tried Zeus Draw, Lineform, and OmniGraffle, but Intaglio is the only one which can convert the PDFs to curves correctly and without crashing. Love it!
Best interface and command set I have found in a 7z compression/decompression application. I add it to my dock and then just drag files to compress/extract them. Also, the 7z algorithm has been improved by the author to support OS X resource forks. I am unable to use the GNU implementation of 7z to successfully extract archives created with 7zX. This is not a bug, but evidence that the command has been adapted for the specific needs of the HFS+ filesystem. My only (minor) point of improvement would be to include command line versions of the improved 7z algorithm so it can be used in shell scripts. :)
Thanks for getting back to me! I am using the Fink package of GNU p7zip v. 4.44. I did some more testing to better define the issue and determined that the problem was in the decompression of a *.7z archive. (It did not matter if I used 7zX or GNU 7z to create the archive.) Upon decompressing with GNU 7z, the paths (i.e. relative folder structure) were not being preserved. They were, however, when I extracted with 7zX. This made me suspicious, so I double checked the GNU 7z extraction command that I had aliased in my .zshrc. I had mistakenly typed "7z e" instead of "7z x"...*blush* I am embarrassed to say that this was the source of all my problems. Thanks again for your response and the good software. I will likely keep using it because of its convenience. :)
Beware before updating from version 5.0.1 to 5.0.2. The latest version seems to have massively broken access to the OS X Keychain, which removes any authorized accounts and prevents them from being added back. It also produces multiple requests to access the Keychain every time the program is started. I tried redownloading and installing the program and reset all of my old preferences--nothing helps.
I just emailed the developer last night, but need to get my hands on version 5.0.1 ASAP because I have auctions running and some finished ones I need to have. The last backup of the program I have is version 5.0.0 which was recently broken by an Ebay API change. The developer on has very old versions for download (3.5.something) from the website and not recent ones!
Very frustrating! I guess I'll be hesitant to update without backing up the program in the future!
