Onlytasks

Islandmike reviewed on 04 Feb 2012
Those under 10.6.8 -- watch out. If you have a notebook with tasks and delete it, then try to rename another notebook you can experience a crash. I was hoping this newest version would have corrected but the bug is still there. The developer seems to have trouble detecting issues on non 10.7 system which is unfortunate but still he should not release the software with a known bug in it in my opinion. Other than that I really much like this -- not too overloaded with features -- with this you tend to actually use it. Very intuitive -- no long read of a manual necessary you can get right to working with it from day one hour one. I use it for my day to day duties -- those get down and get dirty things we all must attend to. For more complex schedules I need to track I use The HIt List and for things like remembering to enter data into my diary or feeding the dogs on time I have iMonTime flash me a notice on my screen -- so I am a three application user.

sendIT

Islandmike reviewed on 25 Jan 2012
This is a good alternative FOR PACKAGE mailing -- for us doing low volumes or who just want to avoid another monthly service fee or the need to invest in pricey labels and printers. This seems to me to be a GREEN alternative to some other methods.

There are alternative subscription mailing services that charge recurring monthly fees -- like stamps.com ($16/mnt if you really want to use a PC emulator!) or endicia.com ($16/mnt)

Subscription services may prefer & in some cases require that you use special "label" stock, and pre-purchase postage that you may lose after printing or damage in the printer -- sometimes non-refundable.

The label stock itself is for subscription services is not free and must come from the provider. You can't always just use your normal home printer -- so carefully add all the costs when you make considerations of one method to another.

Ourselves the convenience of doing USPS click & ship with their automatic discounts does satisfy most of our PACKAGE shipping needs -- however sendIT is a valuable bridge I would not want to burn especially concerning small packages which would not be as cost effective if we just upgrade small shipments up to the smallest flat rate option, which costs currently $5.15 (retail) a pop. Not every package you ship should cost a minimum of $5.15 but that's the only on-line click and ship option open to many of us. SendIT opens that up to us and gives us more options.

Currently USPS does not give us the ability to print all types of postage (like first class for small packages).

For our smaller packages using sendIT provides to us a significant cost savings, and it is a great time saver as we can prep those packages and pre-stamp them before we leave to take all our collective shipments to the PO. Many times in the past we would put small packages into the small flat rate just to avoid standing in the PO lines (with USPS click a& ship you drop off and don't need to stand in line typically).

Our postal clerk has gotten so used to the accuracy of our packages since we have been using SendIT that we can hand them over and she just takes them -- besides the handing to the clerk it is almost as fast as the click and ship portion!

Versus just going directly to the PO, you not only save the time of waiting in line but also on fees such as on delivery and signature confirmation -- these can really add up if you use them and most of us shipping packages do these days.

You have to put actual stamps on your packages or wait in line to buy postage -- no postage will print out from SendIT. We handle that by pre-buying some bigger unit stamps (like the $1 kind) and some smaller units and pre-afflix at home, if we were to not have postage -- the PO clerk can just scan the label and know exactly what to collect from us!

In our case, we save a couple of bucks using SendIT versus just sticking it into a flat rate envelop each time we have used it -- so the software paid for itself fairly fast.

SendIT can be a valuable alternative to get your packages out the door and delivered when snags occur with USPS. USPS simply has gone down a couple of times on us during the last year -- a program like SendIT is helpful to bypass USPS when it can't do the job.

SendIT confirms addresses and has has at times had better address handling results than the on-line USPS system; we have had the personal experience of having their system refuse to make a label to an addresses the customer had for 15 years -- but that was not the case with SendIT, the address went right thru and our happy customer got their coffee when we switched their package into SendIt software!

Works with some USB scales -- we have always used it in manual mode with no problems -- but nice to know that option is open to us.

The software keeps a copy of tracking and of your actual label, so you can re-print or have a "receipt" -- can interface with your Apple address book, and there are some other features thrown in that I never used and don't remember but it is a well thought out "one trick but an outstanding trick pony"

I found a few minor things very early on, emailed back and forth with the developer who did respond and eventually took care of matters in one release fairly quickly and another which was nothing serious and resolved that in a later update. I have been using it since October 2011, so now have had experience with it some 4 months. I would buy it again, and wish I had incorporated it into our system a few years ago instead of months ago.

It's stable, has a developer who does communicate and keeps it up to date, you can obtain savings using this software you can't by going to the post office, it's a good back up to relying solely on USPS on-line if that's all you happen to use at this time -- a niche filler for those of us who ship PACKAGES.

The MacUpdate rating system for some reason froze my stars -- guess they froze when I went in to write -- I'd give it all 5 stars if I was allowed to :)-

Perfect Diet Tracker

Islandmike reviewed on 25 Jan 2012
I checked out most every current "diet tracking" prorgam I could find and worked with a few to see how easy or hard they handled. The prettiest software in the world doesn't do you any good if you are not motivated to come back and use it. Perfect Diet Tracker is easy, 95% of everything I eat is already in its database -- it is not difficult to add others. What you typically eat will come up at the top of your favorite list -- saves bunches of time looking for your foods -- they are fast and easy to add. Everything seems to be well thought out and simple as it can be made but you can drill down to more if you need to.
I did have occasion to find a small glitch early on that I documented and sent to them. They responded back fast, worked to resolve it, and issued an update. I happened to have bought mine with the Mac App Store -- so they were kind enough to let me use non app version while it went thru the approval time warp at Apple. They followed up -- not so usual these days when everyone is so busy.
So am I still using. Did it affect my life. Yes, and yes. It caused me to start noticing what calories came with eating what -- and just by the routine you develop of daily (for me mornings) entering your food diary, putting in your BP, making some notes of what may have affected a gain or loss -- these build good relationships between you and you food and activities and the software is most helpful to get you in the habit with positive experiences to reinforce.
I got serious when I found this program and started being accountable. From June 2011 until now I have lost over 43 pounds. I can look at the history in the software and see the dips and curves and straight lines and know what period that was "when I was really trying", "when the holiday came and we let ourselves gain a couple of pounds" , that sort of thing. But for the first time I can really relate to what types and how much food will cause what consequences. I have learned with the help of the software to get back control.
Worth every penny. Very good customer support from people who care. Frequent updates. Stable.

Cannot get update from developer -- it goes to the Apple Ap store, the when you click on support it takes you to the developer's website but no way to contact. The software I have won't self update -- says there is no update but obviously there is a newer version. Not an issue about money as much as it should not be this hard to get an update without needing to buy it a second time -- the principal of it.

If you email the developer he will send you a code to allow full functionality for 30 days. In my case very helpful as I wanted to check out how it handled tasks, which by default are disabled without a purchased serial number. The developer responded within moments -- a very good sign. He was also cordial and helpful. And then gave a code -- all very positive!

AutoTyper

Islandmike reviewed on 20 Oct 2009
This is BEST in its class. I've tried everything out there. TextExpander is the closest thing to this but in my case I need to retrieve and access boilerplates in more than 36 varieties -- and so I need a menubar pull down that shows me my full title, this one does. It also allows you to put your boilerplates into groups that then automatically sort in the menubar -- sounds simple but is essential when you have a lot to choose from. Some similar programs don't give you big edit windows, the window provided my AutoType is very roomy so you can see what you are doing. It is a breeze to change a word or line, or to copy a whole template and carry it over to a new creation (bringing with it any "tokens" you may have set. One very nice feature is the ability to call from one boilerplate another boilerplate. In my case I may have 18 versions of a boilerplate but some parts are static. I can call the static portion from each of the 18 versions and then edit that one piece without the need to go back into the 18 children to make a revision. This program is extremely well thought out and fast. It does not hog my memory or resources. Additionally, like icing on a cake -- the developer is reachable and listens to what you have to say and often will incorporate your good ideas into his work. In my case, his program was so good I wanted to import my TextExpander file. He provided me that, and put it into his program so everyone else coming after could also use this wonderful time saving import feature. It even took all my snippets calling snippets in TextExpander and converted them to Tokens in AutoType -- everything from one version to the next seamlessly intact and saving me at least a day's work had I needed to copy and paste to transition to this SUPERIOR boilerplate program. I use it everyday for boilerplates, and to bring in digital signatures into my documents. Everything I've needed it for I've been able to do, and enjoy it. That's what software is supposed to be, and this is how a software developer is supposed to behave. I used to have to compromise, no more, this application is EXCELLENT!

Automaton

Islandmike reviewed on 20 Oct 2009
I was surprised when I emailed the developer about AutoType and he was actually interested in my opinions. I would ask and he would do. And when my first concern was addressed, he did not turn and run when I brought up another. It should happen more often that our developers listen and take us seriously. The value of this package is outstanding, and many of us can put to good use these tools he provides; even so if only one is what you need -- he will not force you to take the set if you don't want it, you can buy only one. I especially need in my everyday work a "boilerplate" program. I have bought several and used most recently (before AutoType) TextExpander, before that Typinator, and before that TypeIt4Me. AutoType is simply superior, taking the best of all and putting it all together in one slick package. The editing window is nicely big and allows you the ability to see so you can edit and to copy in one swoop a whole template and take the copy (intact with any "tokens") into a new version and easily alter it to suite another situation. The ability to call a boilerplate from within another boilerplate means you can create a nice form that is customized for a particular use but call other sub parts that remain static so you don't need to re-write 18 times if you have 18 versions. Those who have a handful of insertion needs may be able to memorize their short list and have them entered by keyboard commands, but in my case I need to access about 36 boilerplates and a nice menubar pull down is the obvious solution. This is absolutely the BEST implementation out there -- you can see your whole title (not one that is truncated) from the menubar (and preview it if the title 6 months later does not ring a bell), you can put your boilerplates into sets to make it easier to find, and they get sorted in the menubar. It also works from the dock if you like. And this puppy is responsive and very FAST, it does not hog my memory or bog down my resources! The developer even wrote an import function that allowed me to seamlessly import my old TextExpander files ALL INTACT even with "snippets" being called from other "snippets" -- saving me at least a day of work! That import is built into the program for everyone -- and I suspect there are more to come! It handles signatures, logos, styled text -- nothing I've needed it could not do -- and that's not often something I'd be able to say, I can't with any of the other "boilerplate" programs that make one compromise. It is not everyday that we get a developer that will respond until the features we need are there and the program grows and becomes EXCELLENT. We settle all the time for lower standards, you don't need to settle for mediocre with this guy -- sit back and enjoy as he raises the bar notch by notch. Give this whole set a try with the knowledge that there is a face behind the wizard's curtain that will help you when you need it.

Now X
Islandmike commented on 15 May 2009
There is a public beta now and the application is called NowX (code named NightHawk).
You can sign up and try it at http://betareg.nowsoftware.com/

I used to really like Now Up To Date, and like many others have been frustrated at the length of time it has taken for the developers to upgrade. I have yet to find anything quite like it however -- any one else find something that is currently available that is similar?

But in case you aren't checking the Now Up To Date website and do happen to check here on MacUpDate, there you go if you want to check out the "new" version.
