Defense Grid: The Awakening

This [tower defense] game is really, really good .. one of the best ones out there at the moment (in my humble opinion). The two issues that I have that kept it from being 5 stars was: the game-play is too short for the cost - but worse, the sound starts cutting in and out (and finally off) while playing the game. It seemed to get worse and worse as I got into the higher levels. If they can fix the sound and release a few (free) bonus maps, this'll easily achieve 5 stars.

Parallels Desktop

I highly recommend that you steer yourself towards the far superior product: VMWare's Fusion.

Parallels started out at as a great application, but as features were added and system software changed, Parallels quickly fell behind. As of the last few versions, Parallels became unusable because of a confounding "Failed to allocate specified amount of memory" bug. (See some of their forum postings).

The coffin in the nail was the *terrible* customer support that they "provided." For a fee. That you had to wait on hold for an answer to. That didn't help. At all.

The hard-drive conversion utility made the switch a no-pain, no-brainer.

VMWare's Fusion is solid .. have had very few problems with it, it's been speedy, and they've got superior customer support.

Make the switch, you won't look back.

...which doesn't sound like the definitive, clear choice that you make it out to be [from the review].

Regardless, not being able to even launch Parallels makes the comparison a moot point anyway.

I'll be honest, if I hadn't had such horrible customer service experiences with Parallels I might have actually given [Parallels] a shot again to see if it actually now launches.

No matter though, I'm still really happy with Fusion, and have even recently: run a USB 2.0 scanner, printer, and trackball (natively) through it, and played a few games with 3D hardware acceleration. I don't use it all that often (Windows... >>shiver

Prioritizer

As stated in the description, you have to edit the AppleScript file to insert your password for this application to work. When you do, it's a fairly effective way to increase the foreground process priority while decreasing the background ones. I imagine the developer didn't include a way to save your password for the sake of security.

Here's how to use it:

Right-click on the application (Prioritizer) and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu.

Navigate to Contents/Resources/Scripts/

Double-click the main.scpt file (or open it in your favorite AppleScript editor).

Change the "your paswword"[sic] in the 15th line to your login/admin password. WARNING: this is a security workaround, and while it won't leave your machine vulnerable, if someone has access to your machine and finds this file, they can see your password. YMMV.

Save and close the AppleScript file.

Launch the application.

If you've entered your password correctly, it should stay running in the background, checking every 10 seconds for a different application coming to the foreground, and adjusting the priorities. It should no longer be asking for your password "every 10 minutes."
