It is currently offered at 29.99 at the AppStore. Originally (before 2.0) it had a pricetag almost thrice that of Scrivener, and now goes at half of it. Interesting (or should I say irritating?) pricing policy.
To Caesar what is Caesar's! This is a totally different writing software. It has something to do with neatness and with formalism. Folks who care about good looks of a page on the screen and immediate access to FORMatting elements should consider this app. In that respect it is exquisite.
I have and am currently using almost all the writing applications in the Mac app market: Scrivener, Ulysses, Word 97, Pages 09, Writeroom, Bean, nowadays OmmWriter, along with a few journalling and notetaking software. But Pagehand is superior to them in its wonderful manipulation of formal elements. This is something that may not be seen at first glance (I too missed its forte at first try; I too was misled by some negative reviews here like PDF thing etc. -but then I saw that I was allowed to save/export a document as docx.) Its niceties come off in time, especially for those of us who have come to forget to savour the first lazy moments before a blank page.
Another strong point is its use of tabs a la Ulysses. You can open and edit multiple documents within the same window. So it also acts like a temporary database with integrated side by side and under view options. I find this aspect especially useful. The only thing I miss is full screen editing.
Pagehand, in short, is about pleasurable writing. I heartily recommend it.
One problem I noticed: it cannot play audiobooks. (Nor can Ecoute, actually, or Coverstream or Coversutra.) Why not?
Other than this, it is a lovely application.
Great. Works smoothly and effectively. My Macbook feels much cooler and peaceful now once having been rid of all those disgusting banners. Many thanks to the developer.
What is a single seat, for God's sake? Even bikes have two. Besides, the common practice in the Mac community is letting two licenses (even three) in one purchase as most of us have a desktop and a macbook. This issue remains ambigious on their website. It has been raised by a user in their forums, but is left unanswered to this day. Besides, when you try to contact them, the developers do not encourage you to do so -you are just said: 'due to high volume of mails we receive every day we are not able to respond personally, but be sure we read them,' blah blah. Well, a Microsoftish attitude, it seems. Not inviting, to say the least.
The software is great, though. No doubt of that. But I will not pay for it until they promise support for support, and show us a nicer face. Will stick to good old and now much crippled QS.
Well, change is good. I am using Scrivener and am quite pleased with it. Actually I finished a book on it. But this newcomer to the writers' playground well deserves an extensive test. For me, the result is quite satisfying. First of all, myWords is prettier than Scrivener (though less so than Ulysses). Secondly, it has password/encryption feature -a feature for which the developer of Scrivener refers us to Apple's disk utility which I find hard to use. Well, although I am backing up my creative work in many ways, I know -God forbid- that my computer may be stolen. I do not want to see a burglar's name on my work-in-progress. It has many essential Scrivener features like snapshots, fullscreen, etc. Besides, it has a killer attraction: letterbox mode -I loved it. The only thing I am not sure about is whether it will be able to handle large files. We will see that some months later. Till then, gentlemen, this seemingly small application has won my respect as it is. I hope the developer continues to build on it.
Beware! Something is wrong here! This version (2.0) ate away my licensed copy. It does not accept my license after I downloaded and replaced it with mine (bought from Macupdate). I just happened to be a trial customer all of a sudden. Obviously the owner's changed, and here we are not notified of, or warned against, any surprizes. What a practice!
