hal0thane is a postmodern Renaissance man, a true geek of all trades. Having previously worked in graphic design, computer security infrastructure, Unix systems administration, and kernel software engineering--at an even more varied client list--he now spends his time with photography, blogging, and writing. A Mac geek through-and-through, he sees the Mac's true strength as the ability to merge the power of Unix, the ease-of-use of a traditional desktop OS, and the beautiful user experience that Apple made a name for itself with.

Ehon

Hal0thane reviewed on 06 Feb 2011
Although some much-needed features are missing at present, I have my eye set on Ehon becoming the de facto standard for comic and manga management on the Mac. The user interface is headed in the right direction and needs just a bit of polish -- especially for those of us who favor our keyboards, not mice. Entering data is tedious if one attempts to use the Tab and arrow keys to move between fields; it seems clear that the developer intended users to take their hands off the keyboard and put them on their mice to move the cursor a mere 10 pixels and click, then repeat every 10 seconds. This is the largest problem with Ehon (this and tag entry), and it must be fixed.

Instead of nitpicking on the other problems, though, I will say that I finally found a desktop app that rivals the best of the iPad apps I have been using. For those who read mobile manga, you know that most iOS manga apps are so-so, but a couple are very good. This app is very good other than the polishing and added features it is.

To the developer: I would be happy to give you more feedback if you let me know you're interested.

Archiver

Hal0thane reviewed on 06 Feb 2011
In many ways, Archiver is faster at decompressing most formats than The Unarchiver -- at least, this is my perception. On the other hand, the formats that Archiver supports are the bare essentials: the tar.* flavors, zip, rar, and maybe a few others. Compared to The Unarchiver, it seems paltry.

Only in the most recent version did Archiver gain support for batch operations. However, Archiver does offer a 1-step conversion feature, rather unique in the field of archivers/unarchivers.

Considering the price difference ($19 vs free for The Unarchiver), it hardly seems worth the price tag. There have been times, however, when none of the archiving tools on my system could correctly handle Shift_JIS (older Japanese) encoded files. None, that is, except Archiver. It has other interesting quirks and features which makes it both a dream and a nightmare.

Like the last reviewer, I'm also extremely happy to see this one being brought back to life for Snow Leopard! Thanks!! A donation will be coming your way in the next two weeks. :)

BetterTouchTool

Hal0thane reviewed on 17 Jan 2010
The features provided by BetterTouchTool are simply amazing. Not only does it offer features glaringly missing from the primary alternative MagicPrefs such as per-application settings, it also allows the user to tune values for the "dead" space on the mouse, the touch sensitivity, and even offers new types of gestures not seen anywhere else like the TipTap, the Two-Finger TipTap (the Two-Finger TipTap Middle is one of my favorites!), and the Four-Finger Click.

The BTT web site offers a forum for users to share their own gestures and inspire each others' use of the tool. This is the way the Magic Mouse was meant to be used, and the app itself is Magic Squared.

Adobe Lightroom
Hal0thane commented on 29 Oct 2009
Lightroom or Aperture: There's really very little difference technically. What it comes down to is your own preferences. Download both trials, give 'em a spin, and see which you prefer. That's the only way to decide which to use. As for me, I'm a Lightroom guy -- but I do wish that I had access to all of Aperture's plugins. :)

dupeGuru Picture Edition

Hal0thane reviewed on 29 Oct 2009
Everything Arras said earlier (below), I second. The only thing I can add is that I usually scan at 90 percent, and I have yet to see a false positive out of two scans of over 25'000 images each. As far as false negatives, I can't know, of course, but I can only hope those are as rare.

As Arras mentioned, though, it does take time. This is not unique to dupeGuru PE, though, as all duplicate image scanners will be time-bound. (For the mathematically inclined, it's O(n^2) -- each picture you add must be compared against all the others.)

I was one of the first paid users of TTC -- still using it, actually -- but I suppose time has come to switch, again...

So, which shall it be... Bowtie (again), Cover Stream, or Ecoute?

Letterbox

Hal0thane reviewed on 20 Oct 2009
This is the single most important Mail.app bundle you can install to increase your productivity in the app you spend so much time using. Fast, easy, and unobtrusive, Letterbox is a beauty for keeping your attention where it should be: on the message.

An idea I'd like to see, though, is switching the 2nd and 3rd column so that the middle column (center) is the message -- it's where the focus is visually, and so it should be where you focus on the most important stuff.
