Hands Off!

habitatmedia reviewed on 01 Nov 2011
DO NOT BUY! Really upset over this purchase. Luckily, it came as part of a package that already met its value.

1. They haven't updated the program to work with even the most recent version of SNOW LEOPARD!

2. As a result, I have an app that always opens with a warning reminding me that they haven't updated the app every time I reboot.

3. The program has no way to uninstall (even with MacKeeper) and cannot be removed from the menu bar. So I have a little useless hand just sitting on my menu bar, ALWAYS!

4. The usability is not even half of what Little Snitch offered! For example, once you tell it not to allow a certain IP address, you cannot undo that change. It claims to have a "configure rules" panel, but clicking on that will do you no good. It does nothing!

This program is terrible and I feel that I have let people down by not writing sooner about this!

I have no idea why I switched from Little Snitch! It just goes to show that just because you paid for it, doesn't mean that the free version is inferior!

Macupdate, you guys should stop endorsing this product altogether. It's making me question the credibility of the site.

IMPORTANT AMENDMENT TO MY LAST POST: As any responsible user/poster should do, I can and must admit when I have erred.

1. This program HAS in fact been updated to Snow Leopard and beyond. To their detriment, they did not have a prompt to update the program which I inappropriately presumed to have existed. I have updated the program by downloading it again and they have added automatic update checks. - good move guys.

2. Already addressed above.

3. The program, NOW does have a method of uninstalling. Wise.

4. The usability of this product seems to have changed but is still under review as to the ease of use. I will surely post after a little time with the program.

Finally, as to whether it is worth paying for over Little Snitch, I will also take time to re-evaluate my critique.

That said, this is not a retraction of my previous post as the developer did not put out a sufficient product. However, it must not go unrecognized when a developer takes the steps to correct the problems of a previous release. I however, did not fulfill my end of the bargain as a responsible consumer to actively seek to correct the problems I was complaining about. I guess I've become a little spoiled with the general ease of use of any Mac product or products developed for Macs.

So there it is! I'll be getting back to this post soon!

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THIS WORLD!

Get a life people! Some of you sound biased, at best. I did the responsible thing and I amended my review. These replies are out of line. I'll amend my rating when I feel the product is worth more than that.

The fact of the matter is that this developer released a product that already existed (little snitch) and charged us for it. There was no significant difference between the two products. The only feature that distinguished the two programs AT FIRST, is that Hands-off, the one I paid for, did not release an update after the latest version of Snow Leopard came out and I could NOT uninstall it.

Further, they failed to inform their customers, as most software companies do (an industry standard) when the update was released. Therefore, I watched that stupid icon take up space in task bar. That annoyed me to no end. It is, what it is people. Not everyone checks for updates every other day...nor should we be expected to!

FInally, it seems as if only Martin actually kept reading after my post, thank you for that. Although I still believe you could have used your time more productively. HOWEVER, as for XCO, speaking of refraining from statements that "reek of emotion"...why don't you take your own advice? My GOD, is your mother the developer or something? Why so defensive? Read before you write!

Message to the Dev Team:
Listen folks, you have to understand that when you release a product that people have already been receiving for free, that the expectations will be elevated significantly. You should have put out a better initial product (I will say that the current version is worth the money...for the most part) and you should have not only anticipated the release of a new operating system but you should have also informed your customers of the update.

I'm done with this post, reply away - I won't read it or ever come back to this because I have a life. Its great that there are such motivated supporters out there but those responses truly pose inquiry as to their business affiliation or interests in the matter. If not that, then I have to assume that these users were just periodically checking the comments posted on a piece of software they've owned for a while....strange, anyway you look at it.

Good luck and Godspeed....look for bigger battles to win or your lives will be riddled with mediocrity.

This program is great at telling me what needs update (roughly 90% accurate) but its terrible at actually installing the updates! I may be a bit off on the numbers, but I'm pretty certain that mac update has been able to successfully install only two out of roughly 8 or 9 updates it has identified. Not impressed...and I probably wouldn't be that upset if I was expected to renew! If you expect me to renew a product that ONLY finds updates for your programs and then installs them for me, then at the very least, it should be able to install the program for me because I don't think an application without an automatic update feature exists! So what am I really paying for?

If there is something else, please let me know...bloggers, tech support, VP....ANYONE. Maybe I'm missing something...
