CleanGenius Free

Gregm reviewed on 02 Feb 2012
Very simple operation/UI.

I tested the uninstall on a simple app --- which totally disappeared ie nothing in the trash, no traces found with spotlight nor Find Any File.

Follow-up: Developer apparently finally grasped the concept of Mac app version numbers (previous bug fixes were all ver2, with no announcement). Now functions as advertised on my machine.

One small bug left --- ID's my OS as 10.8.0 --- notified developer.

Developer has been responsive re. support.

MacScan

Gregm reviewed on 02 Feb 2012
Have you looked at the list ? I've downloaded the 30-day trial and ran an administrative level scan.

Preliminary observations/comments:
1. Today is 31 Jan. Most current scan data is 2 Jan.
2. No "live" protection --- scan-on-demand only
3. I'm wondering what it will do with my remote admin assortment ( an "evil" type it looks for)
4. Frankly, I see no claims that it does anything that I haven't already got covered *LIVE* with browser prefs, OpenDNS, using my head when something asks for my admin level password, the free Sophos AV, and a cookie manager

Scan was still going when I went to bed. I woke up to see that it spotted four tracker cookies (that were no longer where it said they were). It did not say anything about my remote desktop apps ( for mac and for PC remote access). It did not spot my eicar test -- but that is virus, not spyware.

I have removed the software as not useful in my case.

We need another category for these "free" apps that are useless without specific supplier paid subscription services ----

Neat new additions to features --(quickly visited by me).

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is *NO* upgrade fee --- my old 2x registration was recognized at first launch.

Year and a half later --- nothing else really compares. Went ahead and registered my wife's PC version (even though she doesn't have 60 critters) to support it.

Here is the only digital game I have ever bought that has not faded away ---
Bought it 10ish years ago and still find it "new" due to the various ways you can play it. The enhancements link opens the door to minor and major changes to freshen it.

Hey MUD!!

This 9.0 "release" was either pulled -- or it is a BETA. 14:30ish Pacific time 20 December the developer's page is offering 8.0.1 as the current version and 9.0 b6 as the current beta.

Also, your screenshot is ver 7

How about cleaning up the info?

CleanGenius Free

Gregm reviewed on 06 Dec 2011
I was looking for a nice Purity (developer gone) replacement. This one does not offer the specific choices/explanations that Purity does

1. Installer contains nothing but the application and a single preference file is created when it runs (install/run monitored by CleanApp). Did not "phone home".

2. During the cleaning, I saw some of my apps flash by (thinking "Oh No -- just lost my game ranking"). A quick check showed things were still intact.

I'll be removing it for now --- but will be watching for promising development.

Bug report sent to developer:
Update/ They changed the name from MacCleaning. The
newly renamed CleanGenius free 2.0 doesn't fly on my machine.

1. I do get the space-available-drop-down-menu- thing on top.
2. Preferences gets nothing
3. Main window gets nothing

PandoraMan

Gregm reviewed on 29 Nov 2011
Ver 1.1.1 shows about 1% CPU usage on my core2 duo system. Now has log-on capabilities without starting off on Pandora's web page first.

The only downside I've caught is that it doesn't seem to use the key chain --- which means a **manual** log-on to get to "my" stations

1. This one proves lack of frequent updates is *not* an indicator of pitiful software. This baby is easy to use & does the job and does it well.

2. When my Doc asks "how are you doing?", I have data to show --- that makes her happy

3. Dang thing also showed that my weight makes a difference in needed meds and stamina. Gotta cut back on those deserts.

4 I use the "notes" to record my SPO2 readings.

Check the preferences.

1. By default, it checks for updates hourly -- and it does appear that they do frequently update their data because I see downloads happening during many of those checks.

You can change that frequency.

2. You can choose to have it look inside archives routinely or not. If you choose not -- it will still check the contents when you actually open an archive -- or manually select an archive to scan.

3. You can also tell it wether or not to do networked drives.

4. In addition to these "built-in" do-it-or-not choices, you can add specific files/folders/drives for it to ignore.

5. You can choose what it does when it finds a problem --- clean, block, move assorted sequences.

6. To save time for manual system back-ups, you can disable on-access scanning during the backup

7. Lastly --- if you out-geek yourself into the realms of outer darkness confussion --- there is allways the "restore to defaults" button. ;P

version 3.4.5 , PPC --- huge logging issue.

Replaced the app with version 3.4.4 from my backups. Re-installed logger with version 3.4.4 ---- seems to have successfully recovered from the 345 bug without having to get into preference files/ support files.

ERRORS?

From the docs included with the updater:

To prevent problems from arising while using this updater, Alsoft strongly advises you to quit any running applications first. If possible, you should restart your Mac immediately before continuing. If you encounter any errors during the update process, you should restart your Mac in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key during start up. You can release the shift key when you see the words "Safe Boot."

Dangit!!!

My dock no longer functions beyond getting the command balloons up. They don't respond and just hang there 'til I move my cursor to "Finder" in my top menu bar. Grrrrr

Yes, I did run a permissions repair.

One shot boot to another drive, then return to the normal on subsequent boot---

Failed to return on my machine (12" PowerBook, 1.5GHz G4, OS 10.5.8).

Jeremy Knope / Buttered Cat Software responded and confirmed that this does not work on PPC machines.

Nice idea for those of us who do bootable backups and do maintenance from another drive. I guess I'll continue to ride System Preferences/Startup Disk until I eventually replace my Mac
