iDefrag

Gary54 reviewed on 04 Dec 2009
I've used this program since I stated using X. Make that about 4 years? Since 10.3? Excellent meat and potatoes program. It does what its supposed to do, doesn't try to do everything under the sun and walk the dog too and its been regularly updated.

It has a good feature set, provides good feedback information about what its doing and the files on your disk. I've used that to clear out gigs of useless junk hiding *what the hell is THAT huge file?*. There is a observable speed up of the system particularly after the first time using it and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

I have always used DW before running a defrag to be sure of the directory being clean ... that only takes a few minutes ...and after to make sure there are no errors after. Cheap insurance which takes but a few more minutes of time.

I have one major complaint about this program. It's .... slow. And I do mean .. slow. Like .. molasses in January kind of slow. If I have a drive with a lot of stuff on it, I set it up to run before going to bed. Most of the time it's done by the time I get up. A few times not.

Contactizer Pro

I gave this thing a spin around the block, while there was a lot to like about it and I almost sprung for it, I ultimately rejected it. The thing which really bugged me was the tabs on the contact cards. You open a contact card and you have to flip thorough tabs to find the information you need .. instead of simply being there in front of you. Then the mail integration seemed rather useless since you can use it to actually generate a mail.

Why cant someone come up with something simple and straightforward like the old Now which has all the stuff you need and doesnt have the gee wiz stuff you don't which just ...works?

Now X
Gary54 commented on 28 Nov 2009
I have been a NOW user for years. There is still nothing else out there like it. I waited like most of us for a long time for this update ... I tried it out and I can think of only three words to describe it: P.O.S. What a boatload.

The folks I feel sorry for are the saps who bought in to the pre release purchase. Some of them have been left hanging for two or more year for this junk to appear.

I've tried every alternate contact manager / calendar out there, and I'm sticking with the old Now 5.3 until it dies of system upgrade failure or someone comes up with something decent to use. Its really sad that for such basic meat and potatoes type of software as a contact manager that no one can come up with anything really good for the Mac.

The built in Address book is a simplistic joke, iCal doesn't even do basic stuff like alternate fonts or have any sharing features unless you buy into Mobile Me or spring for the server software. Five hundred bucks to run a calendar? You must me kidding me. Busy Cal is getting there, but still doesn't have any global font settings and there is no address book other than Apples to talk to.

I have tried 'em all. Every single one of these folks trying to come up with a contact manger/ calendar seem to have got on some sort of wiz-bang gee wow who can out do who visual fantasy ride with core animation and forgot to get the basics right first.

Can the user actually use it quickly and efficiently to do what its supposed to do FIRST. Then if you want to have fun doing the little visual stuff, then go for it. Take all the features and abilities of the old Now, get it to talk to the new built in technologies and actually work ... how big a software development problem can that be?
