Safe boot then Combo 10.6.8 and now Safari 5.0.4 is being loaded with Cookies from visited sites and stranger still non-visited sites dispite having Safari set to "never allow" any cookies! Tried updating to Safari 5.1 and it seem worst.
Clean install then Combo 10.6.7, Safari 5.0.4 and all is back to normal!
Go figure! Surprised that Apple pulled an Adobe or Microsloth with this need to track information…I'm open for payment if they want to negotiate my fees to provide this service! :-)
Smell of a hugh security breach, need to force Lion on us or I did something stupid…however, it's reproducible by updating to 10.6.8.
Suggestion: Install on a separate HD and manual install the Flash Internet Plugin files (2) into the User account only (i.e. NO autoupdate appl, etc.).
Reason: What company needs to have their own compression scheme and installer in OS X? What user wants their Mac compromised?
Problem: The Flash Preference Pane will "overwrite" the User Macromedia preference folder contents even if they have been changed to "Read Only…Apply to all items" then "Locking" the folder. Open the Flash Preference Pane and bam changes! Open Safari and go to a flash website and bam changes!
Safe Approach: Cover your camera and microphone, manually install the Flash Preference Pane and Internet Plugins. Launch the Preference Pane, set your preferences then remove the Flash Preference Pane. Configure the Macromedia preference folder to "Read Only…Apply to all items" then "Locking" it… Use Click to Flash and only allow flash to run on trusted sites.
Totally unbelievable because I would think that it should require the User or Administrative input to change the permission settings! Dang! Imagine what's going one if someone "just installs" this crap into the "first user/administrative acct"? What actually is Adobe, Flash, Flash site collecting and using that requires some covert changing of the permissions?
The very low marks are due to the performance hit when the Flash Preference Pane is active, covert behavior and overall lack of "Mac like" approach to this aging crap!
When DG was able to repair RAID volumes I jumped on board (had been a lurker for awhile)! I'm glad the programmers took out the "forced" install of DrivePulse!
It's going to be difficult using TechTool Pro in the future with how the company takes care of it's customers!
Been with Micromat since TechTool was on a floppy.
Need to be able to disable the request to update the Preference pane if not installed (e.g. CPU hog).
Need to be able to update without purchasing a new DVD (i.e. Micromat should license Alsoft code)
Since Apple has eliminated TechTool Deluxe from the AppleCare bundle and they use Drive Genius in the Apple retail stores, I think Micromat needs to step up their game or greatly lower the price.
Cons:
1 slow
2 holy chit, dang near a 1 GB of space needed for the install
3 expensive
4 bloat ware
5 Windows Restore installed on a Mac!
6 CPU hog
7 butt ugly non-Apple conforming icon
8 sourced programming in which everyone wants a piece of the HD
9 not 64bit
10 not universal
11 what happened to 'drag-n-drop' installs?
12 HD hog of unequaled portions
Pros:
1 early versions available for purchase at a discount
2 second DVD delivered scratched and thank gawd customer service agreed to a full refund!
If you have version 8 then keep using it! Apple iLife will take care of 90% of a typical users needs. Any of the software that comes with Toast is available free or via shareware.
And before you think I just railing on Roxio, I've been using Toast since before they owned the software and with each version it slips further away from the Mac experience in that it needs to be a 'clean simple and easy to use program' and not a Microso$t or Adope attempt to be one application that does everything.
I've made donations over the years to the developer especially during the early years of Mac OS X when the transition from Mac OS 9 was rough (i.e. restorable images, clone, etc. for the lab) but, the advertisements for OWC (I purchase from this company often) while cloning is less than professional.
Make it shareware, retail or opt-out of the banner ads...
Keep a simple program simple…do not create a CPU resource hog!
Returning to version 12 for the following:
1. Installer - why?
2. Icon - confusing, previous version actually looks like what it's suppose to do.
3. Only reason to keep v12 is for the pre-OS X files, Windude attachments or eck .sitx files.
SmithMicro just ruins the 'Mac experience'...when they get there 'PC mitts' on software (e.g. FAXstf was great then there first post-SM update -> crap)...back to StuffIt.
If you have version 12 then keep it for retrieving your pre-OS X files.
Been using it since the beta and it's first rate for a 'non-PhotoShop as a living' kinda person...that said PhotShop Elements was okay but I refuse to buy any Adobe product that now forces you to activate via their servers...period! This is still the United States and it was built on freedom (barring nobama gets into office) so I want the privacy!
Frequent updates, friendly support and nice interface.
-paid cash
-workstation at home
-can't install the software without internet access and phoning home to activate
-Adobe will not now nor in the future even receive my IP or MAC address!
-oh, did I mention I pay cash...people need to understand staying within a budget, investing well and controlling your own destiny...
-I stand behind my comment, review and early retirement managing a self generated 'trust fund' at 37 yo!
Thank you...

How do I disable the "automatic update checking" feature (i.e. dial up, wireless, etc.) so that I can check for updates as needed?

Drive Genius
1. Why no RAID rebuilding of the directory? DiskWarrior make a go of it...
2. How does the rebuilding of the directory compare with TechTool Pro and/or DiskWarrior's approach?
3. Is it true that the Apple Genius's use Drive Genius in the back "test bench"?
Looking to jump ship for TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior for new blood…
Thanks
