VLC 2.0.1 on OSX 10.6.8 fixed a number of stability issues for me compared to 2.0. Previous version often crashed when quitting and sometimes interfered with other apps' audio output when skipping forward or back in VLC. Both issues seem to be solved. Volume OSD did not work in 2.0, now working fine in 2.0.1. Not fond of the always-on sidebar containing links I never plan to use, but now you can default the window to "rolled up" mode so that's not visible.
LibreOffice, as a fork of OpenOffice.org, tries a bit too hard to emulate MS Office 2003/2004, but it's full-featured and works very well. I use it for simple spreadsheets, 300+ page documents with formatting and a personal database. The DB functions are maybe not super easy, and unfortunately in LibreOffice they're a little crash-prone, but overall I am pleased and you can't beat the price (free).
A truly worthy successor to VisualHub. iFFmpeg is drag-n-drop simple like VH, with a menu of presets, but you can customize those presets or create your own if you need to. Does not include necessary ffmpeg binary, but the iFFmpeg site tells you where to find one, or you can build your own using a tool like MacPorts.
I have work people on MSN, friends on AIM (iChat) and friends on F*book. Adium lets me chat with all of them through one interface. Love it! However if I set up F*book using the F*book option, it doesn't connect even after I authorize it through the site; had to set it up using Jabber as the protocol, but found instructions for that on F*book. Adium is great!
I'm a big, big fan of 1Password for Mac. It's helped me expand from using 2 or 3 pretty good passwords to dozens of really good ones, but I only need to remember the one master password to use them all on the web. Even has a place to keep my software license keys, secure notes, credit card information (within the encrypted store) and more. However I have to say I preferred the older style Firefox add-on which showed only my logins for the current site instead of current site at top plus for other sites below; that seems odd to me.
Simple and fast viewing (with some customization options for what gets shown) of video and audio attributes. I like the new feature to preview in VLC instead of MPlayer. Just wish I could make VideoSpec stop trying to connect a website every time I run it. LittleSnitch lets me monitor apps "phoning home". For an app like VideoSpec, I see no need to phone home on every launch.
As a basic image editor or paint program, Acorn is quick and easy and gets the job done well. It's just missing some features like rotating shapes to arbitrary angles. I use Acorn mainly for cropping and resizing photos. I like the real-time preview of filters.
