I just bought iStopMotion from the Apple store and they shipped me version 1.10. I installed it, and entered the license key - all was good.

A check for updates came back with a new version - 2.0. I downloaded it and installed, and entered my license key.

It tells me the license key is only good for the old version, even though I just purchased the product new - I expected to get the latest version.

So I contacted Boinx, and here is what they said;

the Apple Store only ships iStopMotion Version 1 as the boxed version for iStopMotion 2 is not ready yet.

You can now either use iStopMotion 1 from the CD or upgrade to iStopMotion 2. The price for the update from iStopMotion 1 to iStopMotion 2 is just the difference between the old price and the new price and available at http://......

Wow...

I've been in software sales for 15 years, and I've never heard of selling a product, delivering an old version, and then demanding an upgrade fee. When you sell a software product, you deliver the latest released version.

Boinx is delivering Version 2.0 on-line - the product is fully release. In fact they are already talking about the Leopard release.

How can they claim that 2.0 is not the current release? It's even more interesting that the release number is not listed on the Apple site, which implies that the latest version will be shipped or made available via upload.

Has anyone else ever experienced this before? Is this a legal product sales tactics.

I hope Apple knows what is going on.
