OmniPlan

Espiridion reviewed on 03 Feb 2012
If asking a simple question resulted in frowny faces, no doubt my review will be unpopular among the fanboyz. Fortunately, the Omni people addresed this issue in a recent (02/01/2012) blog post:
"Also new and notable! We’re getting started on multi-project support."

This had been requested since 2006.

Version 2.0.3 was unable to open a MS Project MPX file, both using File>Open and dragging the file to OmniPlan. I had to Force Quit OP both times. Merlin opened the file in about 2 seconds.
It did open the MPP file of the same project, and that was a bit quicker than Merlin.

Merlin had a much cleaner view of the project, and this applies to Tasks or Activities, Resources, and Calendar. Merlin offers an additional view (Net Plan).

I tried the "Scale to Fit Project" option only to discover there's no Undo for this.

No problems with ease of use or stability. 4 stars for each of these categories. In terms of features and value I can't rate this higher that 2 stars.

I'll give it another try in version 3. For now, FastTrack Schedule and Merlin are clearly a better choice, and Merlin costs the same as OmniPlan 2.

People with simple PM needs will probably enjoy OmniPlan, but for the same price there are better, more robust alternatives out there.

Although focused on working with audio, some people may find this interesting as it addressees many of the questions that have been posted regarding speed, memory usage, and performance.

MacKeeper

Espiridion reviewed on 17 Aug 2011
F*&k you MacKeeper.

If anyone has read my comments, they'd know I would never post something like this. Until now.

I restarted Firefox only to encounter a pop-under from MacKeeper. I run MacScan weekly and Sophos occasionally precisely to avoid this type of garbage.

What I considered a set of overpriced, mediocre applications now got worse with their terrible "marketing" tactics. There are also YouTube videos and review sites praising this app, but they seem to be fake. In fact, using the same registration provider as mackeeper.

Do you want my PayPal email to send me the money? Or we could ask Macupdate and do it through them.

Yes, I downloaded the software. Yes, I tried it. If I were a moron like you say, I would have purchased it, but I did not want to pay for things that I can do for free or that other applications do better. I value my data too much to trust it to MacKeeper.

Slander is usually orally expressed, so perhaps you meant libel. Both involve making false statements, so obviously your accusation has no merit.

Do they use aggressive marketing that pisses off potential customers? YES.
Are there free alternatives that can perform many of the tasks MacKeeper performs? YES.
Are there shareware/commercial applications that do a better job than MacKeeper? YES.

If you like the software, use it. Insulting others may help you believe that purchasing MacKeeper was a good choice, so keep on doing that if it makes you feel better.
You may want to look up the word sanctimonious yourself, and learn when and how to use it.

A download and a purchase are different things, regardless of whether you use lowercase or UPPERCASE or decide to change your statements.

I downloaded the software. Because I downloaded it and tried it I did not purchase it.
Perhaps if my standards and expectations were quite low and if I did not care about my data I would have bought it.

I've never encountered other reputable developers marketing their software like this. YMMV.

I never said that everything MacKeeper does can be done for free. I prefer to spend my money elsewhere, and have done so. And plenty of fuctions can be done for free.

Again, if insulting people makes you feel better about your purchase, keep on doing that. You have an opinion, and plenty of other people have a different one, including those of us who have tried the software.

Were you in charge of their idiotic marketing and need to justify your work? Do you enjoy paying for free functionality?

Given your lack of reading comprehension feel free to have the last word. I won't waste my time addressing your ludicrous comments.

Mellel

Espiridion reviewed on 16 Aug 2011
One issue with Mellel has been the somewhat steep learning curve. Today they have a PDF manual that's over 300 pages long (with illustrations so don't feel overwhelmed), Help, and more recently a YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/MellelRedlex

It is perfectly possible to begin using Mellel even without the need to access any help. For some things, Mellel is not intuitive so the help is welcome.

I don't recall Mellel crashing on me. I bought my first copy in 2005, but have used other processors more often, mainly Word which I actually really like, plus it worked better in terms of compatibility, comments, tracking changes, etc.

Another one I use is Nisus Writer Pro. Unfortunately version 1 was very buggy. For me it was impossible to work with tables in NWP, and it crashed from time to time. Mellel has been very stable in contrast. Plenty of bugs were fixed for NWP 2, but at $50 for an upgrade I decided to pass.

This brings another attractive point in Mellel; price. The current price -unless anything changes- is $29 and includes free updates for life. I bought a second copy of Mellel in 2008 as part of a bundle, and turns out that I also have those free updates for life.

Mellel may be frustrating for some people. For example, I tried to change the page setup from Portrait to Landscape via File>Page Setup. It did not work.
A few seconds later I went to the Page Palette, selected margins and orientation at the bottom of the Palette, and once there with one click I changed the page orientation. As I said, not intuitive, but it was easily solved.

I do like NWP, and version 2 fixed a lot of the previous bugs (which were left for version 1 users). To me it was not worth $79 initially plus a $49 upgrade fee. In contrast, I was ready and willing to pay for this Mellel update, and was pleasantly surprised to find it was free. For those willing to deal with a learning curve, Mellel can be very rewarding. In this financially-challenging times, Mellel is a bargain. Launches fast, is stable, has many powerful features, and it's easy to write simple documents without any help. For more sophisticated documents even watching a 10 minute video can yield great results.

MPlay

Espiridion reviewed on 12 Aug 2011
IIRC, I used this over a decade ago, and probably made some skins and used ResEdit to customize MPlay. Although the interface is rather plain, this customization (or using the currently downloadable skins) is something that was attractive to Mac users.

Eventually I bought SoundJam (currently iTunes), Audion (the best), and Unsanity Echo (promising but discontinued when they focused on haxies).

While there are alternatives that I use like Vox, VLC, and others, MPLay has these (subjective) advantages; interface and mixer.
On the downside, opening the Trackmixer increases CPU usage considerably. Apparently there's no manual. When the player is stopped Quick Reference is available under the Tools menu and can be launched as a separate application.

This looks and feels dated, but still is a fairly good mp3 player for people looking for something different, particularly the mixer feature. It's not something I would purchase, but can't complain with the current price.

MacTeX

Espiridion reviewed on 10 Aug 2011
I'm a total newbie when it comes to TeX. I had read about it years ago while working on my dissertation, but never got around to really giving it a try.

I decided to install MacTeX a few days ago, and so far I'm loving it.

MacTEX-2011 contains six subpackages:
TeXLive-2011
GUI-Applications
Ghostscript-9.02
ImageMagick-Convert-6.6.9
Latin-Modern-Fonts
TeX-Gyre-Fonts

I'm using TeXShop, one of the GUI-Applications that's included. There are plenty of useful resources both through the Help and online. I was surprised at how quick and easy it was to start creating documents with basic formatting (e.g., bold, italic, different fonts, justification, etc.)

Of course, it will take me much longer to actually learn and perhaps master parts of TeX, but I'm more than willing to put some effort into it. Although now my use will be for text and graphics only and I won't use it for mathematical equations, it sill looks like an amazing choice.

myWritings
Espiridion commented on 10 Aug 2011
Please note that these comments are for version 1.3.3, which runs on OS X 10.5
I have no interest in upgrading to 10.6 or 10.7, so the lack of development compatible with an older OS is a minus. In contrast, Word, Scrivener, Mellel, Nisus Writer, and others, work fine in OS X 10.5.x and, except for Word, all are still offering PPC compatibility.

There’s no button to Save or Cancel Preferences. These are saved by closing the Window.

Working with Tables via a Contextual Menu is clumsy. There’s no Tables menu. There is a sort of Table “inspector” but it is not very refined. There is Table under the Format Menu. If you choose it when no table is selected, it will create a new table. Quite different form other applications which include a Table menu item and commands such as “New Table,” "Insert Table" or “Draw Table”

Opening Word documents results in missing information (e.g., formats, headers, footers, graphics, margins).

The statement from a previous review that “anyone can use this in place of Word” is a bit naïve. As the developer mentions in the Help, “myWritings is not designed and written to replace Word.” This becomes evident when dealing with certain tasks. For example, I found no way to include drop-down lists within a document, or merge data from other sources for letters, labels, or envelopes.

I know it’s popular among Mac users to bash Microsoft. Although I’ve used Macs 95% of the time for over a decade, I actually like Microsoft and use Office regularly. In this case, the developer pretty much says that Word suffers from a cluttered interface and speed issues (among other things). I don’t find Word’s interface cluttered, and interestingly while doing a test of speed myWritings performed very poorly against Word.

I tried to open a 3.1 MB TXT document in myWritings. After 4 minutes of the spinning beach ball I had to Force Quit the application. Word opened it in under 10 seconds.
I gave myWritings another shot, and this time I only waited a minute before doing a Force Quit.
I then tried it with a DOC file saved before with myWritings. It went from 1 MB originally to close to 900 KB after saving, probably due to lost formatting, headers, footers, etc. I was unable to check since after selecting to view the header I only got the spinning beach ball again!
Word opened the file in 9 seconds, and myWritings took 13 seconds. After relaunching the app, using Open Recent it took 11 seconds. In Word this took 7 seconds.
I decided to find and replace some random text. There were 187 instances of the text. Word took about 2 seconds while myWritings took about 6 seconds.

I won’t rate it since MacUpdate does not allow to choose which version is being rated, and my comments are for 1.3.3 and not 2.1. Maybe 2.1 is better.

Does this offer any advantage over the above mentioned alternatives? Perhaps price, but Bean is free.
I prefer Word, Mellel, or Nisus Writer by far. Based on this brief test and the speed, (in)stability, and (lack of) features, I would give this 2½ stars at best. Again, perhaps the new version is better.

Scrabble

An enjoyable game, but it has not been updated in a long time. In tournament mode the computer often uses words that are not present in English dictionaries, and it also challenges valid words. This gets annoying.

MacScan

Espiridion reviewed on 01 Aug 2011
I thought it would be interesting to update my review to compare some numbers.
At the end of last year it had found 76 instances of spyware. Seven months later that number is 326.

Updating spyware definitions and cookie blacklists is done pretty much automatically. Set your preferences, and click if you want to download the update(s).
Updating the application itself is a bit more elaborate. You actually make a purchase for $0.00 in order to download the updater. Not a big deal, but an uncommon approach.

Overall I'm very happy with the product. Since I report spam, scams, and phishing Web sites I like to run this at least once a week. Highly recommended.

Microsoft Office 2008
Espiridion had trouble on 25 Oct 2010
As an update, I got in touch with Microsoft. Their customer support was pretty good, but unfortunately they were unable to offer any solution. The development team is now aware of the bugs, which include the Entourage pictures bug, as well as the Auto Update bug mentioned by FIVEMINUTEMAC. I had noticed this under Leopard (10.5.8) using a PPC G5.

A poor workaround for the Entourage problem is to resize its window. This makes the "Download pictures" link appear. Unfortunately, it has to be done for every message and the link disappears again when switching to another message. This solution was not provided by Microsoft.

FruitMenu
Espiridion had trouble on 02 Sep 2010
Same problems as before with 3.8. Finder quits and relaunches itself, unable to access System Preferences via Fruit Menu, etc.
I get a message saying a new version of Application Enhancer is available: "Version 2.6.1 (Wednesday, December 31, 1969)"
As soon as the download is about to start, Application Enhancer quits.

I miss having Fruit Menu, but this is still too buggy for me.

Thanks MJC.
I uninstalled everything back in July and started from scratch. I did the same this time. What seems to have worked for me was:
-Manually installing Application Enhancer 2.6.1
-Removing System Preferences from FruitMenu. I can access this by selecting Customize Fruit Menu, otherwise it just kept crashing.

FruitMenu now works, with the following bugs (so far):
1. Application icons often disappear. I've noticed this mainly with Firefox.
2. Roughly forty of my Contextual Menus are duplicated.

I'll use it for a few days and then decide whether or not to keep it. It does have very useful features, such as a contextual menu to gather multiple items in a new folder, but I can't stand the bugs :(

Contactizer Pro
Espiridion had trouble on 19 Jan 2010
After upgrading to 3.8.4, Contactizer Pro will not launch on my system. Instead, an application called CrashCatcher launches. It's supposed to generate a report to be sent to the developer, but it does not seem to generate anything.
There's an option to "Quit Without Sending" but if I choose it and try to start Contactizer again, CrashCatcher launches instead.
I went back to 3.8.3 even though it has a few bugs.

XMind
Espiridion had trouble on 13 Nov 2008
I downloaded and installed the file.
When I tried to get my free XMind ID apparently I got the "Captcha" wrong. Now I can't use the user name I chose or my email address since they "already exist"

I downloaded the PRO version, but the "About" information says it's version 3.0.0. My previous copy of XMIND says 2.3.0 Professional.

What are the differences between 2.3 and 3?
Is it just the online subscription?
Or have there been improvements based on user feedback?
I'm surprised to see the jump from 2.3 to 3.0.

This has been frustrating so far.
