Great little app that does one (niche) thing and does it well: MDU automatically checks for experimental beta/forum builds of DropBox for Mac OS and updates your existing version accordingly.
Doesn't seem to use a lot of resources and hasn't ever given me much hassle. Many of the niggles — like Growl notifications that hovered indefinitely or a superfluous menubar presence — have been addressed the longer it's been around.
One thing still gets me, though. It seems like every time I return to my computer, my Growl history tells me that I don't need a new version of DropBox. I'd really like to customize MDU so that it only updates once a day or once a week, since experimental forum builds really only appear once every two weeks at the most.
I've given it 3.5 stars on features since it's a one-trick pony and could use some basic GUI preferences — but top marks in all other categories.
Very pleased with the new updates. I'm back to using QS after about 3 years of LaunchBar. It's not that I didn't like LB; I just never liked it as much as I like QS.
Clunky Java interface and still doesn't embed the GPS info directly into the photo's EXIF information (instead it creates a sidecar metadata file for the RAW image, which can be combined by conversion to DNG), but it gets the job done without too much runaround. JOBO has also been good about pushing out updates and not letting the Mac version fall behind its Windows counterpart.
First, you have to sign up for an account at dashboard-widgets.eu. Why? I don't know. You don't seem to be able to login online and manage (or delete) your account afterwards, so I can't imagine why it would be necessary.
The website seems to suggest that the dashboard-widgets.eu account is optional, but I tried entering auction numbers on the reverse of the widget without entering account info and was repeatedly told to create a dashboard-widgets.eu account.
Then you have to authorize the widget with eBay. Fair enough. But even after doing that, the widget doesn't retrieve any of my watched items and still tells me to "create dashboard-widgets.eu account".
Unless there's a really good reason for it that I'm missing, the devs would seem to be able to save themselves (and end users) a lot of hassle by eliminating the dashboard-widgets.eu account requirement. Shame, too, because good eBay widgets for Dashboard are in scarce supply.
Quick edit: The widget is working using the login info from my dashboard-widgets.eu account in the version marked 1.0 (which has no English localization, apparently). The current download version, which is the one that's been giving me problems (but does have English localization), is designated as 1.4.
I'm still a bit confused, but I will say that things are working with the German-language v1.0.
If only TunesArt offered reliable iPod scrobbling (á la ScrobblePod), the gaggle of iPod companion apps (e.g., CoverSutra, GimmeSomeTune, Last.fm Scrobbler, ScrobblePod) I ran up until tonight, which is when I discovered this fantastic little app, would be rendered entirely superfluous. This is shaping up to be the iTunes companion app to rule them all, a great mix of aesthetics and functionality. My fingers are crossed for my feature request.
a) it supported DrayTek VoIP devices, and
b) it weren't so damned expensive. I mean, $25 for it to liase with the device and display a caller ID pop-up? That's about $10-15 more than I'd be willing to shell out.
Seems to have some memory leaks (10MB on launch, but climbs quickly thereafter); tons of interface bugs (changed account names don't stick, services are listed as "never updated" directly after an update, many essential fields and drop-downs are still in Italian); a lot of popular services are missing (where are sipGate and the US carriers?); and the one working service I could find, Vyke, repeatedly froze and called up the spinning beach ball after 40% of the SMS was sent.
Oh, and quirky Address Book formattings, like, say, +44 for the country code and area codes in parentheses, appear to cause PiggySMS to short-circuit.
The idea sounds promising, but a 1.0 release this is most certainly not. More like a 0.1.
The first scrobbling app to successfully scrobble *all* the recently played tracks on my manually managed iPod Touch 2G to my Last.fm account. So now I'm using it in place of the official Last.fm client (too clunky) and AudioScrobbler (great features but too hit-and-miss).
The memory leaks and runaway processor usage that some other users mentioned back in February seem to be fixed. SP has been running since boot-up this morning and is currently consuming 0% of the CPU and just under 37MB of RAM. Not too bad.
For those still on the fence, SP offers some nice perqs. You can exclude tracks with a certain comment, ignore certain media, and there's seamless Growl integration. If it matched AudioScrobbler one-for-one in terms of features, it would be the Last.fm client of my dreams.
I think this dev has unfairly received an awful lot of flack for what seems like a pretty standard donationware policy and a product description (for beta-level software, no less) that could have been better but certainly isn't the worst I've seen.
I gave SoCal a try and I quite like it. It's much more accessible than Organized and more functional than DoBeDo, both of which have functioned as my widget to-do lists for ages. SoCal's integration with iCal is better than Check Off's menubar list, and it omits all the unnecessary bells and whistles of MenuMinder ($10) or DeJumble ($19!).
Is it worth the $10 that the more feature-rich MenuMinder charges (as shareware, keep in mind) to get rid of the donation nag? I'd probably feel more comfortable donating $5. But it fills a niche that no other menubar to-do list does (at least the ones that I've tried), and I really can't quite understand why this app became the focus of so much animosity in its first few days on MU.
I'd like to award five stars just to counter the one-star gripefest below, but I'll keep my rating independent.
Since downloading v1.8, I'm unable to login and get repeated login errors (in the form of a red stripe at the bottom of the widget). Is this a known bug?
The login culprit is Free Flickr Exporter (FFXporter), on which the PixelPipe Exporter is based. By disabling FFX via the Get Info window, the PPX will login without problems.
To their credit, PixelPipe support was very quick with a response.
I'm having the same problem as I was before with SB 2.1. I get the "first run" window, but I can't close it and Safari won't open a new window. The "first run" window also doesn't stop reappearing when I quit and relaunch Safari.
Does this have anything to do with having Safari AdBlock installed? Is anyone else having this problem too?
When I installed SB2r2, on launching Safari I got a "first-run" dialogue window that explained the basics of SB. It included a small checkbox for setting automatic updates.
I couldn't close this dialogue box and I could not open a Safari browser window. Restarting the computer, repairing permissions and relaunching Safari yielded the same results. All I could do was force quit Safari and uninstall SB.
I really relied on SB when I was running Tiger. But SB2 has been nothing but flaky.
7zX created an invisible or "hidden" temp file (.7zXtemp/) on my desktop, which wreaked havoc during a backup operation with Carbon Copy Cloner.
What happened was that somehow my entire user directory was aliased in this temp file, causing the clone operation to copy data infinitely (since the alias existed in the alias too).
I have no idea how this happened, but I'm wary about reinstalling 7zX now that I've upgraded to Leopard. Has anyone else experience this? Was it a bug left over from earlier versions of this compression app?
