Some time ago, a colleague of mine mentioned AppleJack. It sounded useful, so I downloaded and installed. Not two weeks after I installed AppleJack, I was unable to boot my Macbook Pro. I used AppleJack, and I was sorted out straight away. All of my usual 'tricks' had been unsuccessfully exhausted before I tried AppleJack. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
