Elmedia Player

Dominikhoffmann reviewed on 08 Feb 2012
You need to buy the PRO version (lists for $19.99), which was just what fit the bill, when I wanted to have local copy of a video file embedded deeply in a web page and served as an RTMP stream. Other solutions I had, like Videobox, didn't even detect the video on that page.

For me, I was still willing to part with what it cost to download the PRO version, but it was somewhat painful, given the anticipated rate of use. I am hoping that this software will have a long life. You can apply Coupon Code ELMEDIA-TWITTER-15 to your order, to knock off 15%, at least.

I use it all the time. It could cost a little less.

Popcorn

Dominikhoffmann reviewed on 18 Mar 2011
My biggest gripe with Popcorn is that it frequently refuses to convert DVDs to MP4s with an "ID = -50" error, aborting the conversion process without much of an explanation. This is with VIDEO_TS folders copied to my hard drive with which Handbrake has no problems. I therefore chalk this up to bugs that have persisted across versions (I have owned Popcorn 2, 3, and 4).

The reason I continue to use it is simply that I like that its user interface, which is quite good. It allows me to easily select VIDEO_TS folders for conversion, select tracks from within the DVD, even allowing me to watch what's on the track, if I want to be able to identify what's what, because I only want to convert one of several tracks.

In addition, for conversion it appears to use the QuickTime interface with the same options I have when converting a track in the QuickTime Player utility (Version 7, QuickTime Pro functionality). I can change target video size and frame rate and even choose multi-pass encoding, which results in smaller file sizes with better video quality. Handbrake only does two-pass encoding.

In short, when it works, it's great.

Quicken Essentials

Dominikhoffmann reviewed on 17 Feb 2011
I am willing to upgrade my star rating, because with Version 1.5.2f6367, it became a lot more useable and faster. I will have to see during the next couple of months, whether this translates into real time savings, but it really seems it will, especially in budgeting. With Version 1.5.1, if I changed an item's category, because while reviewing my monthly budget I noticed it was mis-categorized, the updated budget would take quite long to re-computer. Now it's a fraction of a second.

I don't know about any of the other features that people have harped about (I'd love for them to provide their analysis of this version), but pulling in transactions from my bank and budgeting is much improved in this version.

Looking at the other thread starting by me and what others are writing, combined with my own experience with tech support (via chat to India) during the 11 PM EST hour, I have to say that their update management only deserves one star.

It appears that communications with the people releasing the update and their tech support center is really poor.

Why don't they, like most everyone else in the Mac community, make a two- or four-week trial available online, which would also work like the full version, when authorized with an installation code. That way, we could always install the latest version, without having to install one from our original download or CD first.

As of 11:20 EST on 2/16/2011, Version 1.5.2f6367 is not available through the in-application menu selection. I am in line for a chat with a support specialist (in India).

They are providing me with a download inside my Quicken.com account, even though I purchased it on CD through Amazon.

I can see the update, but it turns out to be 1.5.1 from October 2010.

Maybe, with it being business hours in the U.S. now, there would be a little bit tighter feedback between the people releasing the new version and their tech support. Anybody willing to get in touch with them this morning or afternoon?

Great! My in-application update mechanism is now letting me update to Version 1.5.2. Taking place as I type this. Thanks for the heads-up, Vitaly!

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Platinum

Dominikhoffmann reviewed on 13 Feb 2011
I have two major issues with this software.

1. Every time I launch it, it asks me for my admin password. I can't give that password to my daughter nor type it in every time she wants to use it.

2. It forces a screen resolution switch, which messes with icons on the desktop.

Overall, it looks more like a poor port from Windows, even if there the software is pretty good.

PDF Unlock

Dominikhoffmann reviewed on 04 Nov 2010
This program did exactly what I needed. I had some pages in a longer document, which I needed to manipulate in Adobe Illustrator. PDF Unlock allowed me to save the unlocked document under a new name. The new PDf document was completely unlocked and opened in Illustrator without problems.

ShareTool

Dominikhoffmann reviewed on 21 Jul 2010
ShareTool works really well. Before I had it, I would have to set up individual ssh tunnels for each service. Now I have access to my home printer, can help my wife troubleshoot by controlling her computer from work, and save files to my home server. It's almost a VPN.

I'd give it the fifth star, if on the server side it could run as a daemon. Then I wouldn't have to be logged in there, and it would run even aft er a reboot. But then I gather that the Yazsoft people are thinking about including that feature in a future version.
