Beamer

Dmu reviewed on 26 Dec 2011
This has been a lifesaver! So simple and kept me from having to jailbreak which freaks me out a little. But there are two things that would get that last half star. One, subtitles, but they say they're working on them. Two, it seems that sometimes the resolution isn't as high when playing through Beamer. I watched an AVI and it worked great but was a little pixelated. So I converted the AVI to M4V and put it in iTunes. The M4V looked better.

No FancyBox Safari Extension
Dmu commented on 12 Dec 2011
I have been happily using FancyBox for my portfolio website :( I had no idea anyone had negative feelings about it. It's the easiest and most versatile lightbox I've found. Can anyone recommend another if people are going to start blocking it?

Hey Pacman, this is embarrassing... I just checked my site (daveulrich.net) and realized that I USED to use FancyBox, but at some point I switched to prettyPhoto. So block away! ;) Sorry for the false alarm.

Firefox
Dmu commented on 26 Aug 2011
First of all, I don't know how we got from 3.6 to 7.0 in just over one year, my head is spinning. Second of all, I see the changes as being relatively small, especially for these number jumps. It still doesn't FEEL like a Mac app. And lastly... what is up with all of these FAKE reviews saying all the same stuff with different accounts. Is it Mozilla, or just self-appointed trolls?

wow. that was an interesting display. i never even mentioned safari, whitebuck. so i don't see where all of the crazy rage came from. i was talking about the new version numbering, the fake reviews, and the still slightly awkward ui. i actually use firefox. jeez.

Bean

Dmu reviewed on 30 Mar 2011
TABS!!!!!!! I've been screaming from the rooftops that one of the bajillion mini word-processors out there needed tabs to finally simplify the workspace without simplifying the amount of work you can do at once. I liked Bean's speed and simplicity, but it didn't really stand out from anything else... until now. Why now? TABS!!!!! Now if we can just talk about that low res icon... :)

Adobe Flash Player

Dmu reviewed on 08 Mar 2011
I'm so happy that even though Adobe has never bothered to make a satisfactory Mac version of this software, they've decided to start piling on features like analytics to their broken, sloppy, and generally disgusting software. Thanks, Adobe, you king of buggy bloat.

I've followed the directions exactly and this absolutely does not work. My smart folders do not show up any messages with the tags I make. It doesn't make any sense why it doesn't work – and I am a power user, I'm not simply doing it wrong.

TotalFinder

Dmu reviewed on 28 Feb 2011
I love the IDEA of TotalFinder, and I try to use it. But the author seems obsessed with Chrome as if it were this brilliant first thing to have ever implement tabs — now even changing the traffic lights we are accustomed to throughout the whole OS to match some browser from Google. Weird. Especially since I personally hate the Chrome UI compared to Safari. Besides, I want my tabs under the tools like Safari, and like Wunderbar! (the TotalFinder of the late mid-late 90's). I want them near the window content, not up at the top for and even bigger mouse/trackpad movement to get there. If TotalFinder were to be total awesome, it would offer Chrome & Safari styles to choose from.

Scrivener
Dmu commented on 02 Nov 2010
Over 40 reviews that are all five stars, a fanatical user base, and rave reviews in nearly every Mac magazine & online site in existence... yet the huge and dramatic 2.0 release of Scrivener (arguably the best Mac software I've ever used) isn't even a bolded, featured app on MacUpdate. Hmmm... what in the world is the criteria then?

Adobe Flash Player
Dmu commented on 16 Sep 2010
"Lightweight" hahahahahahahaha. I tried buying a movie on Amazon's Video-On-Demand and the plug-in crashed 7 times and in every browser. When it finally did play, the audio and video were not in sync. If you are a Mac user, Adobe really doesn't care about making this work well. I yearn for the day it is no longer necessary.

myRichTexts

Dmu reviewed on 14 Jan 2010
ok. i'm falling in love with this application. i've been dying for a quick and dirty word processor that would keep multiple documents in one window via tabs or a list. word? forget about it. mellel, schreiben, bean, neo office, open office, abi word, copywrite, mariner write... you name it. nope, no tabs, no doc list. there is only one that wisely kept all windows contained instead of creating an insane mess: lotus symphony. unfortunately symphony is a terrible java port with questionable compatibility. there is also scrivener, but all of the open documents have to be related and stored therein. so along comes this snappy little gem and i tested it by keeping idea lists for different projects and i found it to be was easy and customizable. it's not perfect, but it has great potential and i have only one real gripe... the price. this is only a basic word processor, the only real stand-out feature is the organizing and multiple document abilities. and yet it's over twenty bucks?! i'm tempted, but i just can't pull the trigger. it's nice, but i already own a handful of the competitor's apps. unless it becomes a macupdate deal, a maczot, or a macheist deal, i can't see myself splurging like that for a two trick pony.

Subs Factory
Dmu had trouble on 16 Dec 2011
I just want to convert a sub file to srt. but opening the sub file takes about a half an hour or crashes the app. If I do manage to get one open after a half hour, the encoding is wrong. But when I choose another encoding to see if that's the right one, it's another half hour wait or crash. I think life is too short for this app.

Apple iLife
Dmu had trouble on 22 Oct 2010
Just installed iLife '11. I'd love to tell you what I think, except it doesn't work. iPhoto needs to upgrade the database - gets halfway through - crash. 6 times. After restarts, permissions rebuilds, everything else I could think of... no go.

Schreiben
Dmu had trouble on 06 Mar 2009
i love the idea of this app and the developers seem supercool. however, i simply can't use it. for my work, we use word doc scripts with headers that contain company information. And then the content itself is in a table. however, this app cannot properly open word docs. the header is down at the bottom like a footer and the content is on top, and if it goes to a econd page all heck breaks loose. i test it with every update, and it's never been able to open word docs properly. if they ever get true word compatibility, it could become my everyday app.
