iAntivirus
Derekcurrie commented on 26 May 2012
iAntiVirus was originally from PCTools and was, for a time, thorough in its detection of Mac malware. I liked it and recommended it as a free option for Mac users. Then PC Tools effectively abandoned it, making it worthless.

iAntiVirus "1.0" is the result of Symantec buying iAntiVirus and posting a new revision. So you're not having déja vu. My immediate response to anything Symantec is: "Oh yeah, the liars who invented the ongoing anti-Apple malware FUD attack in March, 2005". I've also never had a good experience with Symantec software I'd bought. Symantec's purchase of iAntiVirus reminds me of their purchase then burying of the terrific MacTools utilities. But I keep hoping Symantec will see the error of their ways. So judge for yourself.

Astroturfers:

"Astroturfers are most often highly paid lobby groups or political operatives, who act at the behest of an organization or individual with a stake in the successful outcome of the astroturf campaign. A successful astroturf campaign can sometimes emerge into a genuine "grassroots" movement and most astroturf campaigns are not discovered and/or discredited until long after the campaign is over."

Elmedia Player

Derekcurrie reviewed on 22 May 2012
Just about any other player is better. AND the developer coerces SPAM reviews of this app, as one can witness either here or at [the competitor site that shall not be named]. Shameful crapware that is unworthy of the Mac platform. It has been that bad for years.

OpenOffice
Derekcurrie commented on 10 May 2012
Go get LibreOffice, the progressive spin-off project from OpenOffice. Oracle have allowed OpenOffice to fall behind. The majority of OpenOffice developers have moved over to LibreOffice as a consequence. Don't expect OpenOffice to catch up.

Thank you Umaromc. After LibreOffice overcame their bugs and became viable I gave up watching the OpenOffice soap opera. It is terrific to have the project out of lazy Oracle's hands! Hurray. We may actually see these two projects recombine, which is I believe the way it should have always been.

$24. Or you could DIY with Apple's FREE Disk Utility. It's in your Utilities folder. Of you could automate it yourself with Apple's FREE Automator app using the "New Disk Image" command. Try it! It's not hard! It's FREE!

Because Java has been bastardized into a security vulnerability abomination under the ownership of Oracle, I suggest AVOIDING this software.

Alternatives:
1) The Tor Project, via TorBrowser and Vidalia.
2) The use of a Torrent black list such as at:
http://list.iblocklist.com/
3) Encrypting everything. This includes:
• Only connecting to websites via SSL, aka HTTPS
• Install and use GPG, Gnu Privacy Guard
• Only upload encrypted files to the 'cloud' via SparseImage containers which anyone can create using Apple's Disk Utility app.
• Moving over to cloud services that encrypt your files on the CLIENT end, with no encryption key available to the cloud service itself, IOW no key to hand government criminals.

I'll be pulling together a suggested privacy app collection at:

Tor

Derekcurrie reviewed on 05 May 2012
This is NOT 'Tor 1.0'. There is no 'Tor' except as a project name. This is TorBrowser. AND: There is no TorBrowser '1.0'. The current version is 2.2.35-11. (The Get Info box for TorBrowser has always said '1.0' and will always continue to say '1.0').

No wonder people get confused about the Tor Project when even the download sites can't get the version numbers right! If you really want to start understanding the Tor Project, visit the Tor Project:

https://www.TorProject.org/

The Tor Project writes two main pieces of software:

1) TorBrowser, as linked above.

2) Vidalia, which is NOT linked above. Here is the link:
https://www.torproject.org/projects/vidalia.html

Tor technology takes time to learn. Start with the TorBrowser then dive into Vidalia when, or if you are ready.

Tor is helpful for maintaining our US Constitutional right to PRIVACY. Thanks to the fascist Corporate Oligarchy corruption of our US government, our constitutional right to privacy as citizens on US soil is being destroyed. Fight back with the Tor Project and other privacy maintenance software. Tell the Corporate Oligarchy and their political puppets to get out of the USA and die in some forsaken hole of their own digging and devising. They are not welcome here.

Wacom Tablet Driver
Derekcurrie commented on 01 May 2012
The usual WARNING: Check very carefully that YOUR Wacom tablet is supported by THIS driver. There are, inexplicably, TWO running lines of drivers for Wacom tablets. One is the 5.x series for the Bamboo and Graphire. One is the 6.x series, as found here, for the Cintiq and Intuos series.

DO NOT get them mixed up. If you install the wrong driver series, your Wacom is not going to work. If you are uncertain what to install, check on the Wacom site: http://www.wacom.com

Please don't post 1 star rant reviews when in fact you installed the wrong driver series. TY!

Adobe Flash Player

Derekcurrie reviewed on 16 Apr 2012
THIS VERSION BOMBS. Flash has had years of troubles. But here's a new one: It bombs intermittently. In your browser you suddenly find you can't use Flash any more. The box where the Flash media used to be now says you have a plug-in error. You have to reboot your browser again to get it to work again.

Instead of installing this update, just skip it. It contains no security improvements, so there is nothing dire about this version, for a change. It doesn't hurt anything, except your patience. So give it a try if you like and good luck. I simply threw it away and went back to the previous version, which actually works, as well as Flash ever works. (I'll be so glad when Flash dies the death...).

VoodooPad Lite
Derekcurrie had trouble on 20 Nov 2008
Note that the version 3.5.2 of Voodoo Pad Lite is too stupid to realize that version 4.0 is NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.11. Sadly the installer is ALSO too stupid to check what version of Mac OS X it is installing into and happily wipes out your good copy so it can replace it with a worthless copy of 4.0, totally screwing over your ability to use the program in 10.4.

I have written the developer about their bugs.

It is great that this excellent program is provided for free. But self-sabotaging programs are not tolerable. :-P
