Fantastical

Bigboysdad reviewed on 24 Jan 2012
As regards calendars, Fantastical, in conjunction with Busycal, is about as good as your going to get on the Mac. However, with this update, I was hoping for more. The developers have been advising for a while now that to-do functionality will be available and we're still waiting. This is not a complaint, just me (and I dare say a few others) hoping that we don't have to wait too much longer as this much needed feature will make Fantastical a 5 star app.

SuperDuper!

Bigboysdad reviewed on 21 Jan 2012
I've been with the excellent SD for many years and it remains as always a lifesaver for any Mac owner. However, it's designed primarily for the purpose of cloning an entire drive. Whilst I can see the reason for this and am sure this suits most people, my own backup requirements involve just cloning the boot drive and applications to an external drive and, apart from a few essential preference files such as those belonging to Diskwarrior etc, excluding the home folder from the backup. This is easily done with CCC as you simply select which files and folders to include. With SD, you have to select which files and folders to exclude. If your backup requirements are like mine, this makes SD's set up more time consuming and IMO can result in user error if your trying to be very specific as to which files and folders are include/ excluded (not unlike Backblaze in fact). This is one of the main reasons I use CCC instead. This isn't a complaint - as I say, SD is excellent and the most stable software I've used - just an observation for anyone who doesn't need to clone the entire drive.

Big Aperture

Bigboysdad reviewed on 14 Jan 2012
I'm no professional photographer or developer, but still, this is unbelievably good for 99 cents. I must admit, seeing the start up screen with no tools, instructing me to drag and drop an image into the app, I wasn't expecting much, but I was wrong. Once you do that, a reassuring number of tools and options then pop up enabling you to fine tune your image in a number of ways. The end result is, I have to say, very good.

I have so many of these quality one trick ponies in the hope of achieving a cheaper and faster replacement for Photoshop - its apps like this that justify that belief. The general quality of the end result is such that I even go to his type of software before Pixelmator, due to the amount of time it saves.

Seeing as its the only place you can purchase Big Aperture, the App Store is evidently relevant to this software. I'm not an App Store "believer" and for me it will never replace purchasing software through Macupdate or from the developer direct, but considering that software like this is now available when it wasn't before (well, not for 99 cents) as a result of the App Store, I can now for the first time, start to see the App Store's value.

Expensive. But it is currently the best. Personally, I use the free version as I don't find the ads to be that disrupting, well not for the sake of $20 anyway.

Apologies - just realised that looks like a sock puppet/ fanboy comment to keep up the ratings of this software and relegate other reviews down the pecking order. That's not the case. If you gain some enthusiasm for Chromium (which isn't difficult if, like me, you discover how simple yet powerful it is), you'll find Chromatic very useful, if not indispensable. To date, almost all of the "beyond beta" updates applied via Chromatic have worked perfectly. But even on the rare occasion where that's not the case, its easy to just revert back to the most recent version of Chromium you were running that worked fine. Chromatic provides Chromium updates every day at least, so do be sure to note whatever latest working version of Chromium you are running in case you have to revert back to it.

Carbon Copy Cloner

Bigboysdad reviewed on 26 Dec 2011
My backup routine involves cloning my boot drive to one partition of an external drive using specialised cloning software and copying my home folder to another partition of the same drive using specialised Backup software - long story, having learned from personal experience, I've seen that its best for me to do a backup routine this way.

In terms of the cloning software, (not backup software), I decided to change from Superduper to CCC. Whilst SD is excellent, developments in OS X keep changing and it currently seems that block copying, which is what CCC does, is the way to go under Lion. As regards just copying just the boot drive (with no Home Folder save for a couple of absolutely essential preference files for apps like Diskwarrior), my experience with CCC is that the setup and speed of the software and quality of the clone is foolproof and first class, the clone itself cannot be bettered.

Does one thing and does it extremely well.

Super Flexible File Synchronizer

Bigboysdad reviewed on 26 Dec 2011
I've had my eye on this for some time and have now had a proper tryout. Its available on both windows and Mac and has a multitude of backup/ sync options. It's apparent that the GUI is windows-like. Not the end of the world for me; with backup apps, its the power and capability of the software that's more important than the GUI and for me, the key feature of SFFS compared to other backup software is how it backs up part of a changed file instead of the whole file that's been changed - that really does cut down backup time and is a key feature. Just as important, the file metadata copying is first class as well. It seems like a superior Jungledisk alternative. Arq is the best online backup app for you own HD, but SFFS can easily be configured to be used for other backup/sync tasks to Amazon S3.

Despite these plus points however, there are a number of things which aren't quite there yet. For example, after preparing the app for a bootable backup to one partition of an external drive with archiving to the other partition of the same external drive, the following was apparent:

*High CPU/ RAM usage.

*The long length of time it took to complete the backup, almost 3 times the length of time of other apps (5 hours for just 110GB of data on my drive). I was surprised at this and was hoping that SFFS's ability to dynamically detect changed files would quicken up the process. Not so.

*The fact that it didn't properly compete a bootable backup.

*The log file for this backup was nearly 1GB in size. I imagine subsequent incremental backup logs will be smaller, but that still seems unreasonably large.

The software continues to be actively developed, so it could well be that these issues will be addressed in the forthcoming version 6. For the time being then, whilst it is clearly proficient at certain tasks, I'd suggest a wait and see policy before splashing out and using this as a primary backup tool.

Mac DVDRipper Pro
Bigboysdad commented on 10 Dec 2011
Apologies for sounding naive, but is there any practical difference between using this and the tools freely available in OS X? Just asking as my DVD's are currently ripped by inserting a DVD movie into the Mac's DVD player and just imaging it to a DVD/CD Master Disk Image which, once opened, plays fine the Mac DVD player.

Thanks for he replies. Yes DVDs are on the way out.

What I meant by "imaging it to a DVD/CD Master" was making a Disk Image of my kids' school concert from the home made DVD provided by their school, which does not have anti-copy protection software built into the DVD disk. In that scenario, I've never had a problem using Disk Utility to "Rip" the DVD movie. However, from the comments here, it seems that MacDVDRipper Pro is a bit more like MacTheRipper and that being the case then yes, I can see how it would be much different to making a Disk Image of a DVD movie. Will now give it a go.

Warning - check this app has a proper un-installer or un-install instructions before installing.

At best, the various associated files spread around the HD at time of installation, mean that even after trashing the app, its processes are still running in the background, unnecessarily using up cycles.

At worst, this app still flashes up on your desktop even after it has been trashed.

In my experience, it has proven very very difficult to completely get this app and its various associated files off the HD.

This outfit have taken my money, supplied a serial, only for me to be told that "Registration Failed!". An email to support has also been returned by the recipient domain. I appear to have thrown my money down the toilet. In the name of fairness, I shall update Macupdate immediately if this matter is resolved. Until then...

DO *NOT* BUY THIS PRODUCT.

Fixed - I managed to get this working by using File Buddy to identify and delete all traces of the application from my HD, then downloaded and installed a fresh version of the app, entered exactly the same registration details and voila, it registered. Had to work all this out myself though as the dev still didn't get back to me. So, to update my previous advice, its only fair to say that, provided you manage to get it working then yes,
