BBEdit

Big77 reviewed on 01 Aug 2011
What the heck was barebones thinking?

Functionality is stripped out. For example documents drawer replaced with non-movable sidebar which can't get keyboard focus and is missing a "Save" feature. (Yes, you can get rid of it with an obscure command line preference!). "Text Factories" are now "Filters" (though displayed messages still refer to "Text Factories") but can no longer be applied to several files at once.

UI improvements? None that I notice. Just some preferences moved so they are no longer all in one place and a horrible implementation of a preferences dialog added.

Bugs cleaned? I don't know. Seems to me same silly things are still there. Like how come when I search a single file for all occurrences of a string I'm told a "Multi-file search" is completed? Well at least that's no longer echoed onto the console.

New features? Yes. At least some. Zip file editing and packages support comes to mind. That's nice. Gotta give them credit there.

Trying to mess with prices so they can sell a crippled Apple store version makes no sense to me. I think it will not go over well, but we will see.

I've been using BBEdit as long as I can remember and paid for every upgrade. Sadly, both those things are likely to come to an end now.

Cookie

Big77 reviewed on 05 Jul 2011
Cookie is pretty much unusable. I simply don't understand how displaying a list of tracking cookies uses up 100% of the CPU for LONG periods of time. Leave it running long enough and the app eventually quiets down but then even just selecting a cookie in preparation to delete it causes the CPU to spike all over again for a long time! Every click causes fans to roar and I have to wait seconds to minutes between clicks just to me able to click again.

Something is very wrong here -- we're not dealing with millions of records. Not even many thousands. What could possibly be going on to cause this absurd sustained amount of processor use?

The developer states "as it has to analyse each and every cookie you have on your computer... if you have a lot - it takes a while." I say nonsense. Even if it takes a while to analyze every cookie (and I can't imagine what complicated analysis is being performed for what are pretty small and simple files) this does not explain why even just clicking on an entry causes another long CPU spike each and every time.

Sure, I can delete all my cookies and then perhaps Cookie won't hang. But if I delete all my cookies then why would I need a cookie manager?

RouteBuddy

Big77 reviewed on 03 Jul 2011
Astonishingly slow rendering a map. On an 8 core power mac with plenty of free memory it's quicker to go to google maps via a slow internet connection and get the map than it is for Route Buddy to draw it from the internal hard disk. And zoom in a notch? Yup, we wait all over again. Makes no difference if I use Open GL or software rendering. That said, version 3 seems only slightly slower than version 2, which also was horrible.

Entering an address is hit or miss -- generally miss.

Importing and displaying tracks works very well.

I like the company and love they are filling a niche. The product continues to disappoint. I will still support the effort and hope they get it right one day.

USB Backup

Big77 reviewed on 04 Mar 2011
All this discussion about price is pointless -- it has nothing to do with performance. Let's discuss if the product actually works.

It seems to, but with qualifications. It's a very simple backup -- seems to be a file copy (includes invisibles) of what's on the USB drive, placed in a package. No compression, no encryption, no areas not containing a file (i.e. I don't think a bootable image would be properly backed up). And although the backup really is at the file level once you open the package, the restore is all or nothing unless you know to open the package and drag out what you want.

It is pretty neat to plug in a flash drive and have it backed up automatically and quickly. if this is what you're looking for, then maybe it's worth the price to you. If not, not buy it. In either case, know the application's limitations as well as its strengths.

Runes of Avalon 2

Big77 reviewed on 23 Feb 2011
Version 2 has distorted graphics for me and was unplayable so I was glad to see what seems like an update. But now this seems to be controlled by bigfishgames and it wants to download some game controller which just immediately crashes.

Guess Runes is still ruined.

I'm very pleased to see this being developed again. Launchd entries are not easy to work with -- Lingon almost makes it doable for the rest of us!

Note about updates: Checking for updates is broken. It will tell you there are no updates when there really are. The only way I know to get the updates is to download the free trial, which is the full program. It will ask for a name and e-mail address but they are not verified -- I just give support@srslabs.com as my e-mail address :-)

And don't believe their release notes either -- there are lots of versions and changes not listed there.

Also, if you are getting an error on your console about an invalid iWow plugin in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL then delete the iWow.plugin that's there, then run the latest iWow installer.

Yes, they are sloppy, sloppy sloppy. But the program does work. Eventually.
