Just updated to 11.64 and found it uses a lot more RAM (memory leak?) -- as in twice as much: 440-550 MB compared to 220 MB previous for 6 open tabs. Also found it using 100% of CPU (this is on a 2010 MBP running OS 10.6.8). Closed it and restarted it and the RAM and CPU usage are creeping up again. Also found it hanging intermittently for several seconds at a time.
I'm going back to 11.62.
The rating here is for 11.64; the low stability is for the memory leak and high CPU usage.
Reinstalled 11.62 and RAM usage is down by about 50% and CPU usage is between 0.2% and 10% once all pages are loaded, whereas it was at least 50% -- and at one point 100% with ver. 11.64.
@Sir69, if your recent, most eloquent Opera philippic was for version 11.64 in particular, I now have to say I heartily concur with you: it really does NOT join out for me -- at all. One might even say it is the Madame Butterfly of browsers.
Although I like to hang on to .dmg's of older versions of software for backup purposes for just such cases as this, the Opera website also has all the older versions available:
It's hard to take seriously an anti-malware product for which the product description is rife with English usage errors, yet the company claims to be based in Virginia, USA.
And to be clear, I fully understand that English is not the native language of all (or even most) developers, nor do I even assume English is the lingua franca of software.
However, I take a very careful look at any anti-virus/malware software I am considering to install on my computer, and such matters as described above make my spidey sense tingle.
In addition couldn't find any reviews of this product with a google search either, so I think I'll pass for the time being, thanks.
I meant no disrespect, and I appreciate the fact that you appreciated the fact that mine and other dubious commenters did not, out of hand, give bad ratings to your product, as we haven't used it. I wrote what I did (and I figure other similarly inclined commenters did too) both for your (the developer's) sake as well as for relative newbies who might wander upon this page and see the glowing sock puppet reviews for this product and download it straight away and install it based on these specious reviews.
I also checked the profiles of some of the glowing reviewers and found that a number of them had signed up for MU accounts on the day this product was released. This further raised my suspicions and caused me to write my initial comment as a heads up for others.
Furthermore, I'll say that some of the other commenters fleshed out some of my own concerns, so I am not going to repeat them, besides saying that marketing is a crucial aspect for any product and new anti-virus software really needs to be akin to Caesar's wife, i.e. above suspicion. I'll mention one other thing: There's not a plethora of free anti-virus/malware products for the Mac, so a new one undoubtedly catches a lot of attention AND scrutiny here at MU, so you really do want to put your best foot forward.
I will, with the best of intentions, make two recommendations to you:
1) Submit your product to some webzines/blogs for review -- such as OSX Daily or Mac World, but there are many others. Try a search of "comparison of free anti-virus mac applications" to find some have articles on this topic and contact them.
2) Call off the sock puppets. SERIOUSLY. Regular users of MU can smell them out at 50 paces, and will definitely call them out -- particularly when it concerns anti-virus/malware software, because of past such abuses by purveyors of not-so-fine "anti-virus/malware" products. It really doesn't help your cause, if your product is legitimate, to use guerilla marketing tactics of this ilk; to wit: you've already seen the backlash to it.
Please take this in the spirit it was meant, i. e. respectful, constructive criticism.
I've been using version 1.0.3 for a little while now -- and several gigabytes worth of downloading. It works purdee well and has a fairly decent set of features. However, it could do with a little bit of documentation for it - either with the app content bundle or on the developer's site. I give it a fairly low stability rating because some of the features/control functions seem to fluctuate in how they work, and since there is no documentation, one can't them out; for instance, some of the contextual menu times are now whited out and I cannot figure out why, as I haven't changed any preferences.
In addition, while using, I all of a sudden encountered an odd intermittent internet connection problem (ping failed as well), with outages and uptime lasting anywhere from 5-10 minutes (approximately), which was only resolved by rebooting.
Now I can't with 100% confidence lay the blame on this application, but I haven't had this problem before in a year's use of this computer on the same wifi connection, and the internet connection was still working for other computers on the home wifi network when this problem occurred, and there have been no other changes, i.e. new wireless phones or any other new devices or connections. (FTR, this occurred on a MPB Pro with OS 10.6.8). But the features/controls I mentioned that all of a sudden stopped working, these issues coincided with this problem, so that makes me think the problem was related to this software.
That all said, I do like this application, but wanted to give a heads up to potential users as well as to the developer that there may be some idiosyncrasy in it as is.
Since writing the above review, I have tried extracting from some of the larger .rar files I downloaded with this application and found them corrupted. This occurred in 3 of 4 larger files I downloaded ( > 250Mb). Seems to work fine with smaller files, i.e. under 50MB. Be sure to try to open/extract any files downloaded with this software before downloading more, so you don't waste time and bandwidth.
As is, I'd have to down-rate this to two stars because of this problem.
Just tried it out (ver. 1.6.2) and it works as advertised (on OS 10.6.8). Was able to read the decrypted output text file. One thing I did was make sure that I deleted the source text file input bar before changing to decoding as that looked like it could otherwise potentially be a problem.
Also like the fact that documentation comes with the application and is accessible directly via the GUI. Two thumbs up for this, Developer.
One slight improvement would be for the application to accept jpeg files with the ".jpeg" extension (as is only accepts files with the ".jpg" extension) -- a very small issue, to be sure.
FTR, it appears that the MU description has a typo: the developer's site says it is a front end for Outguess 2.0 (not 0.2).
Does not appear to provide the option to Show Package Contents for application bundles, which is purdee much a deal breaker -- and the reason for the low Features rating. Tried to see if there is documentation for this application, but that is hard to do if one cannot access the contents of the application bundle...
It is nice to have a free file viewer with tabs, but that alone isn't enough to recommend it.
As a free alternative, try Triplea (also in MU). It is a game engine with a multiplicity of scenarios, many involving WWII -- if that's your thing -- and a large user community.
I noticed this application in my dock, but forgot where or why I had it, but I do know that -- without fail -- I don't download apps from the MAS store (or just about anywhere else for that matter) without first checking them out at MU, if possible. So I did a search within MU and this page did not come up, which left me scratching my head. Only from a google search did I come upon this MU page. Even if an application is discontinued, it should show up in a MU search.
Up until today I had Roccat 1.0 running and it restored previous sessesion's tabs. Now with 2.3 there appears to be no option for this under preferences, i.e. always starts up with one fresh window. Is this feature enabled elsewhere than in preferences, or is it no longer available?
Never mind. Now it starts back up with previous opened tabs.
Seems a purdee decent browser, but will use it a while longer before posting a review. I do, however, like the grey "eco" background in the search page -- philosophically, if not aesthetically. Not so much for the saving of energy, but for the minimal wear and tear on my rig's LEDs.
