I've been using Pathfinder for several years, and although it may take some days to get used to, the benefits over Apple's Finder are too numerous to list in a review. Tabs, split windows and the shelf are just some of the great things to speed up the workflow. Really, I can highly recommend this add-on. Well, at least I used to recommend it.
Unfortunately, since quite some time now, the better Apple's Finder has become, the more Pathfinder feels like a clunky add-on. Especially since Lion, PF feels everything but transparent — not to say clumsy. I've tried TotalFinder for a couple of weeks now, and although it feels less heavy than PF, it often appears rather unfinished. Needless to say, but I just can't compete with PathFinder's features. I really hope that PF6 arrives sooner than later, with new freshness, and tighter integration with Apple's Finder. Generally, speaking, it's a clear FiveStar add-on…but due to code obesity, I can currently only give it 3,5.
Wow...so now I can't change button functionality based on application anymore? Gee, thanks Kensington; way to stay in touch with your userbase.
To clarify: in previous versions (MouseWorks 3.x) one could change settings based on application, so that one could, say, have button 3+4 trigger the "Back" command in a webbrowser, but use the same combo for "Info" or "Move to trash" in the Finder. Needless to say that this is/was very nice.
I have yet to run into a mac user who doesn't use and love this utility. With its minimal footprint, fair price, and straight-forward interface (well, at least for most) this one belongs to the first 10 apps that gets installed on my new setups; along with PathFinder, Alfred/QS, VLC, FontExplorer, Cocktail, 1Password, Xmarks etc.
The only part I wish would improve, would be for non-tech savvy people (hi mom!) to have some kind of walk-through setup, where the typical messages are being explained. Oh, and I don't get why it's not possible to have the app itself remind me when there's an update.
Featuring a foolproof, straightforward GUI, with most of the options well organised, this app is everything you'll ever need for normal maintenance. If DiskWarrior is the Kalashnikov you'll unpack once a year, this is the FlakCannon you'll unpack once a month.
I just wonder, now that everyone and their aunt is getting an SSD drive, if there are any changes when nursing these - as opposed to HDDs.
Can someone please let me know why utilities like Delibar or Pukka don't support the rating of bookmarks? Matter fact, I don't know of any Delicious related utility that lets you rate your bookmarks.
