CoolIris

Wile-E. reviewed on 08 Nov 2011
For the longest time I was a big fan of Cooliris but eventually its compatibility updates fell behind the progress of OS X and Safari so I had to let it go. I was pleasantly surprised to see this release today. That is until I saw that there were no release notes and then read a few comments regarding Lion.

I navigated to the Cooliris site to get info from the Developer and see that despite this being suggested as an updated release at MacUpdate that support for current browsers and OS'es has lagged considerably. How hard would it be to include at least one complete release note saying what browsers and OS'es are supported instead of making people dig to simply be disappointed in your efforts due to misleading System Requirements listed here.

EarthDesk

Outstanding app. I resisted a bit to pay for the High res cloud images but decided to this morning and I do not regret it. The imaging is exceptional.

I have never experienced any problems with EarthDesk and appreciate the care that has gone in to its design. There are quite a few configurable options but they are not overwhelming in the manner of some apps that try to offer too much.

Easy-peasey to set up and has been rock solid throughout.

I can't comment on Xeric's support because I have had no need to ever contact them.

iGetter
Wile-E. commented on 26 Jul 2011
iGetter support states "Current iGetter version should work fine on Lion. However, v2.8.7 is not compatible with Safari 5.1 and Firefox 5". Since Safari 5.1 is part of Lion this means that it does not work yet. Presenta offers a silly workaround which includes turning off the features that I suspect most users took advantage of to make iGetter useful. Here is a link to the Presenta Bulletin Board regarding Lion:

File Juicer

This is not a new version. It has the exact size and creation date as the previous release of it 4 or 5 months ago.

I can see you are measuring the size of the DMG which can be different for a number of reasons unrelated to File Juicer itself.

If you mount the DMG I suspect you will find, as I did, that File Juicer's size is exactly the same - 9,520,292 bytes (10.3 MB on disk) - on both the previous release and this "new" posting to MacUpdate.

ResizeIt

Wile-E. reviewed on 23 Apr 2011
I have tried similar apps for resizing but none of them performed for me the way this one does. A few simple preferences provide all the options I need to edit either a single, or batch, picture's dimensions or overall size.

My only criticism is that occasionally I will launch ResizeIt and I will get an alert that the version I am using has expired and I need to download a newer version.

Are demos allowed on the App Store? If they are it is a disincentive to me even though this is only 99ยข.

CosmoPod
Wile-E. commented on 07 Jun 2010
I am pleased to add a very positive comment.

I received an excellent response from the dev that answered all my concerns clearly and renewed my confidence to reinstall CosmoPod. The options and power for the small shareware fee are very much worth it and I have missed having it available.

I leave it to the developer to announce any upcoming changes.

CosmoPod
Wile-E. commented on 02 Jun 2010
I recently discovered (apparently) with this new version that the installer does not contain all the required parts to complete the installation and actually takes you to a third-party site (box.net) to download and install "additional binaries."

I e-mailed the developer and, while I did get an answer, it was not a satisfactory answer as to why this method was chosen and particularly why it is not disclosed. I sent a number of follow-up messages asking for a reply and have heard nothing since May 11.

imo, it is unacceptable for a developer to create an installer that fails to clearly inform the user that this is what their installer does and to provide a credible reason why it would be necessary. The reason I was given was that it reduced the initial CosmoPod size and would speed up the upgrade.

This is smoke and mirrors. While it may appear that the CosmoPod installer is small the user still has to download whatever the binaries are. The developer needs to be open and clear about this installer and what the mysterious binaries are.

After being a fan and registered user of CosmoPod I have removed the old version from my system and will not use any of their software unless and until they are much more honest and clear about this.

DiskWarrior

Wile-E. reviewed on 29 Aug 2009
After trying and having it fail after entering my info and the SN I tried a Safe Boot with the same result.

Eventually what worked for me was to use my old, installed, copy of Disk Warrior to rebuild the Directory of the newly made disk image *before* entering my personal info and the Serial Number. It fixed a number of issues on the image and it then burned perfectly.

I have booted my machine with the new CD and will say that this version is noticeably faster to start from the CD and performs the Rebuild faster as well. I did not time it but it was noticeable for me.

Except for the significant problem many are having creating an updated disk with this new updater this would rate 5 stars so I decided to rate the Ease of Use low although it almost doesn't fit that category.

Illuminated Clock Screensaver

Wile-E. reviewed on 24 Aug 2009
I decided to try this out and let my machine activate the saver. Typically, if I have a saver running I will just hit the Space Bar to return to the Finder. I did so and was quite surprised to see Safari launch and take me to a French web site. Initially I thought one of my grandchildren had mucked about with something until a little more exploring made me realize the Dev had set it up that way.

I don't appreciate being directed to any web site that way and think the Dev should have been upfront about that "feature". I have searched the read me's and the web site but find no reference that deactivating the saver will launch Safari and take you to a site without user knowledge or approval.

Excluding this faux pas I like it and give credit for a nicely compiled saver. I chose to edit the copy I have to eliminate taking me to your site.

I don't see how to respond to the comments from the Developer directly in this forum.

Part of what you said was "Ideally it would have been nice to contact me about this instead of posting a slightly negative review assuming things about the screensaver."

I see no where to actually do that but did look. I read the read me and license with the saver, looked on your web site, and also clicked on your name in the Reviews and comments at MacUpdate but got told you don't exist.

As far as my assuming things about the saver it seems to me that in Quartz composer when you select a new ScreenSaver project the Web Page URL is optional and would require user input to link it within the project as well as provide a URL. If I am misunderstanding how this typically works then my apologies.
