XTorrent is now officially cheating, announcing itself as Azureus 2.5.0.4 in order to force connections to trackers which banned it because of its behaviour.
If you verify the receipts for GoogleDesktop.pkg and GoogleModLoader.pkg, which is what the guys at Ars Technica should have done in first place rather than just trusting John Gruber, you will notice that no files are actually installed in the main System folder.
The mdimport binary is not part of Google Desktop, but of Apple's operating system. On my machine it is dated Jan 2006, way before Google Desktop came out. Also, its manual page can be found on ADC.
The tool itself is actually much faster than Spotlight, completing a test search in about 3 seconds while Apple's tool took about 20.
I also have no processes sucking all my resources, or any of the problems which the other people on MacUpdated reported. Good job boys. :)
