MailMate

Tannin reviewed on 19 Mar 2011
MailMate is the answer to my dreams.

I have long been looking for an email client alternative to PowerMail, very fast and with a strong search facility—but it never really implemented unicode, nor IMAP, both of which I need on a daily basis.
Mail never pleased me (I lost emails in it in the early days), because it is too slow, looses passwords (keychain problem, but my other clients never had this), sometimes chokes on attachments, and has a very poor search facility.
No need to comment on other options.

Mailmate is fast, reliable, clean, and has a strong search engine which is as customizable as that of PowerMail, only of the 21th century. It supports Unicode. It is still actively developed—with a responsive author—which bodes well for the future. It is also written for Intel machines and OSX, which means a cleaner code than most, if not all.

It has a particularly clean layout, which is good. Lots of keyboard shortcuts. I'm so pleased with its existence that I'm writing this review even before I fully explored all its options (although I have been using it full-time for a week now).

MailMate

I have been keen on a new email client that supports IMAP. Apple Mail too often creates problems (repetitive messages, just have one again, that comes in a hundred times each day), slow, and other problems.

MailMate has been improving even in the short time I've used it, and doesn't have too much eye-candy, which is good. Unfortunately, my university's IMAP is apparently a sort of IMAP that is not yet supported, as it refuses to import that account or switch it on. That is also the only reason I have not yet purchased MailMate, because I need this address to work. But I am impressed.

I also like the search options, which seem to be fast. I always liked Powermail for their blazing search facility (but alas no IMAP). If search could also include the option to seek after a given date (or n a range of dates), that would be dreamland.

Keep it up!

Just for clarification: "Server has no UIDPLUS extension" is the error message I receive, but my other three IMAP accounts work smoothly.

PowerMail

Powermail has always been blazingly fast, both in mail handling as in searching, and searches are highly customizable too. It still is.

Unfortunately, the developers have not been able to keep up with changing conditions. Powermail is still *terrible* in IMAP (it only supports one IMAP account at a time, and that one often crashes, while the handling is extremely poor if it doesn't crash).
Powermail does not fully support Unicode (you cannot write in Unicode), or html. Its text engine was developed in the last-century, and the unicode update of WASTE has not been used in updates of Powermail.

It is telling, too, that we're still at version 6 in October 2010. The folks at CTM probably just keep those customers who did not yet abandon them happy. Not the time to buy into it, then.

I've had versions 2 to 5, but passed on 6 (after a try-out). I would happily fork out the full price if it were up-to-date.
