Keyboard Maestro

Steresi reviewed on 27 Feb 2010
I've depended on Keyboard Maestro pretty much ever since switching to OS X years ago. I use it to switch/launch my favorite apps without taking my hands off the keyboard, open frequently used folders, automate processes in BBEdit, Excel, and Entourage, run command line apps, and even automatically lock my computer when it wakes from sleep but not when coming out of the screen saver (I couldn't find any other method to do this).

Recently I had some questions about using Keyboard Maestro to conduct a search using arbitrary search engines (e.g. Wikipedia, Google Products, etc.). The developer, Peter N Lewis, was very responsive and even offered an AppleScript that could be used from within Keyboard Maestro to partially do it. He may be adding this feature in the future. (I currently use Butler for that job.)

Excellent app for all sorts of jobs, and great to see that it continues to evolve!

Time Tracker
steresi commented on 04 May 2009
Excellent well-rounded program if you simply want to record the time you spend working. I don't need fancy reporting functionality. It's open source and has a good developer site.

Star
steresi tipped on 27 Jul 2008
I think this application is no longer actively maintained. I've had problems with it showing high CPU usage in Activity Monitor, and also quitting itself after a while sometimes. It was still very useful, though.

For fans of this program (or the similarly defunct "iTunesRating"), it looks like we finally have a candidate for a replacement! Try "I Love Stars" by Potion Factory:

Note: it requires at least Mac OS X 10.5.
