So....I bit the bullet the and went back to 2.8. And the bullet was sweet as honey. Small unobtrusive list of online users. Small unobtrusive row of action buttons on top.
That said, a company does have to survive and make money, and that is in the end the purpose of a business, to make its owner(s) money by providing a service. I do not begrudge Skype attempting to get people to plug down money. The alternative is massive ad banners. But the UI on 5, well, what everyone said plus the inconsistent call quality -- echoes, cannot hear one side, and the like.
I have been using Check-Off for years, and am still using the last pre-shareware, freeware version (3.8). It is stable, a good combination of simplicity and utility, and aesthetically nice. The only draw I could find to the paid version -- and it does seem like a good feature -- is the fact it can be used on an iPod and synced to the computer. I upgraded the OS to 10.7.1 and Check-Off has finally started behaving erratically - as have some other apps.
MenuCalendarClock gives you several nice customization options for your menubar clock. It also integrates well with iCal. I have found MCC perfectly stable. I have used it for many years and am generally happy with it.
The display of iCal information is not all that easy on the eye, certainly not to take in at a glance. Inputting information and events takes you through several windows. There are free menubar items and widgets that input new events into iCal a bit more simply and display iCal info more effectively. In terms of bang for your buck, IMHO, you are really paying to customize your menubar clock.
Is it me or did 5.3 remove the possibility of grouping online people at the top? Until I find the button, I must scroll through all my contacts to find who's online. The menubar button also does not show who is online, just what my own status is. Is there a way to customize that?
One more possible improvement: When opening a bunch of emails from the Inbox, closing any one of them would make the Inbox window active again, not the next email.
I love the look and customization that is possible. But through various versions I have had repeated trouble, in which streaming of either voice of video hands the application. Safari never has this problem. Any help welcome.
Double-modifier shortcut to activate interface no longer works. You now must have QS in front for double-modifier to work. Is there something I am missing?
In SL Pastor files revert to txt default so that one must first launch Pastor then open the file. Get Info changes do not seem to stick. Does anyone have a way to keep Pastor files in their proper format?
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I already had a bundles folder created. I copied LB 0.24b4 into the bundles folder, as instructed. Downloading 0.22 and installing that worked. Apple's Mail preferences now have a Letterbox menu or page or whatever you call it. Attempting to replace 0.22 by 0.24b4 resulted in losing the functionality again. Why 0.24b4 doesn't work I do no not know. But 0.22 does, and now that I have Letterbox, just as others have said, there is no turning back. Thanks.
