I have emailed Canon about the 100% processor use of this software when not doing anything - they claim to be unaware:
"Please be advised that up to now Canon has not received any information about a bug in the Canon Toolbox software."
And - instead of evaluating this problem on their own computers - could only suggest a reinstall:
"What we can suggest in order to fix the issue is to completely uninstall the Canon drivers and software and to reinstall them from http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010012.asp."
Can I therefore suggest that ANYONE WHO HAS THIS VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE NOTIFY CANON OF THE PROBLEMS SO THAT THEY DO "RECEIVE INFORMATION ABOUT A BUG IN THE CANON TOOLBOX SOFTWARE".
The bug is clearly easy to fix, as I have downloaded later versions of the software (ver 4.9 and ver 5.0), which look identical but do not saturate 100% processor. However these versions do not support the LiDE 80, which is what Canon MUST enable.
Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and change 'Other Options' Settings for: Battery to 'Reduce the brightness of the built-in display when using this power source'.
If the cord is unplugged the screen will dim noticeably. Of course it won't dim if originally at 1 bar, but if you're plugged into power why are you using the screen on minimum brightness?!
