I have been a user of NeoOffice for about 18 months. It performs very well and I even write technical books with it. In my view it compares favourably with Word, mainly in its ability to write long texts, in many parts. I would have liked a bit more of typographic sophistication (as in, say, Mellel or, better, Framemaker), but it is, anyway, better than Word in that respect.
I upgraded to version 3, but the program felt very slow. As I only have 1G RAM, (but an Intel processor) I thought this could be the reason.
I downgraded to 2.5, and all is well again.
