Comodo is definitely a step-up from Avira. Features like on-demand scanning, Game Mode, and good control of what & how it does what it does. It might be a bit intimidating to users who aren't technically inclined or inexperienced with A/V software but it isn't too bad. There was no noticeable effect on my QC Mac Pro's performance, though it did indicate what I believe to be a false positive - a clip art PDF in Toast's Disc Cover 3 RE.app. At the same time it found a dirty Java file that Sophos, ClamX AV, and MacScan all missed so maybe Comodo is more sensitive(?).
Of the A/V apps I've tried, Avira seems to be the no-frills of the bunch. As far as I could tell it has scheduled scans and manual scans, but if it has on-demand scans it wasn't apparent to me. The preferences are not the clearest I've seen, but it didn't seem to slow down my QC Mac Pro.
I was using Sophos Home Edition as my primary A/V and running MacScan occasionally, primarily to clear web browser files, but on 2012/05/22 I began experiencing kernel panics. In the text that appeared onscreen the Sophos kext was referenced so I uninstalled Sophos Home Edition and the kernel panics magically vanished.
It seemed to work pretty well up until that point, running in the background with no noticeable slowdown and automatically updating itself, but obviously kernel panics are a deal breaker.
MacScan has always just worked for me. I like that it includes the ability to clear/delete web browser files, a feature that more A/Vs should include.
I used to use Sophos primarily and MacScan occasionally to clean my browser files but a recent Sophos (kext?) update led to kernel panics so now I rely solely on MacScan.
I seem to remember reading somewhere lately in an article about Microsoft's roadmap that development of Silverlight was dead or all but dead.
Regardless, I don't have Flash installed on my Mac Pro (I use Chromium instead) and I'm not going to install Silverlight either.
If I could dump Java I would do that too. Flash, Java, and Adobe products are full of security holes. I wouldn't be surprised if Silverlight were the same.

Couldn't uninstall it fast enough.
