Notice for all users who have decoding problem. (x264Encoder 1.2.19 or later)
If you specified target data rate, some key frame may show broken image, with Apple H.264 Software Decoder. You can check such stream using QuickTime X player.
If you have found decoding problem with output from x264Encoder please try to :
- change Behavior tag - qmin from 0 to 3 or grater value
inside libavcodec settings dialog.
It would make such stream decodable. (Re-encoding is required though)
//
Such erratic stream should be decodable with Perian 1.2.2.
But current implementation of QuickTime X/QuickTime 7's H.264 software decoder seems to have incompatibility problem (under Snow leopard).
xvidEncoder may work with MPEG Streamclip's AVI export feature with some limitation.
- Perian required. QuickTime native AVi importer is completely broken.
- No DivX decoder.component. It overrides Perian's AVI import feature.
- No B frame (or uncheck frame reordering). AVI container's B frame hack is crappy.
This is because AVI requires media compressor component like xvidEncoder, to emit stream in "Packed bitstream" format. It is ugly hack, so it easily loses compatibility with most container other than AVI.
That is the reason why I say xvidEncoder is incompatible with AVI.
I hope everyone uses MP4 container instead of AVI.
First, I don't have Apple Compressor 3.5. I can not debug on it.
Second, Episode Desktop Version 5.2.1 (23234_20090703) does NOT support "Frame reordering" capability (My component's requirement).
Download Episode 5.2 beta from Telestream download page. I have tested using Beta Version as 5.2.1 (23243_20090706). Free Demo mode is enough to test.
1. Launch Episode Desktop 5.2.beta.
2. File-NewSetting...
3. At Output Tab: Video : Choose QuickTime
4. At Video Tab: QuickTime : Click QuickTime Movie Settings...
- Choose Compression Type : x264Encoder
- Set Limit data rate to : 1000 KBytes/sec for ex. (Multi Pass is recommended)
- Or Uncheck Limit data rate for CRF mode (Single Pass only)
- Check Frame reordering for B-Frame support
- Set Prefered Quality. Medium is enough for casual encoding.
- Click Options... and make settings as you like
5. File-Save... and name your prefered setting

Perian runs many media type, but does not have postprocessing filter nor color adjustment.
You can install both.
