Evernote

Mac Os X 4ever reviewed on 09 May 2012
Really too bad. I have been wanting an iTunes/iPhoto like app for documents for a while. iPhoto would be great if it could handle any file type.
I was hoping someone would have developed a document solution by now, but maybe we have to wait for Apple to come up with one.
I recently figured out how to get iTunes to accept PDF files and I am trying to use it for now.
This app looks so promising, the fails miserably with file size limits and horrid handling of local files.
There shouldn't be any file size limit at all for local files, and it needs to handle local files better. You can't even create and use a local database until you create an online one.
Then once you do, and you start your local file database, it give file size errors that are insane.
Even if you purchase the upgrade, I believe the file size limit is a pathetic 50MB.
I am still watching and waiting for someone to get it right.
Maybe Evernote can take some of this to heart and make a "local only" mode, and remove the size limits. only limit sizes for online files!
You can copy files from the Finder into the Evernote file structure and force large file into it, but what a pain.

Thank you for this.
I installed Lion, and Apple is so stupid. A MacBook is NOT an iPhone.
So they think we can't tell the difference between a touch screen and a trackpad?
Lion makes it so un-natural!
Thank you for fixing it. I am very surprised that Apple doesn't have a check-box in the system prefs for this.

I love this app, but even after this update, old bugs remain.
I am so irritated at the one in particular where you eject a volume from the left folder bar, and the entire folder bar vanishes as well as the toolbar.
I have to keep hitting the oval button in the upper right corner to get the folders and toolbar back.
If they would just fix this I would give it 5 stars.
It is irritating me to no end.
And, no, I am not ejecting the active volume in the window, that would be understandable.
I can have "Macintosh HD" active in the window, and eject a mounted DMG and it happens.
It's pretty consistent on failing. It happens a lot!

Evernote

It seems really bad unless I am missing something.
Every time I start it, I get that irritating "welcome to Evernote" video and I cannot get rid of it in prefs or anywhere.
Furthermore, I cannot get the web page capture to work because a logon keeps popping up.
It seems like I cannot do anything at all to even evaluate the application without creating an account.
I DO NOT want an account, not even for free. I just want to try it local and see how well it does or doesn't work and if it fits my needs.
Am I missing something? Is there any way to get rid of these popups and account problems so I can use it locally and see if it's any good?
I am not willing to create yet another account to use a local application on my computer.
In fact, I will block it from the internet if it tries to phone home, even if I do like it and want to use it.
I am looking for a good clean notes utility with an iTunes type of interface.
Maybe this isn't even close. I don't know, because it's unusable.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good one?
I would like smart folders, Quicklook, etc....
I have purchased other in the past, like Notebook3, but it's not too complicated and takes too much time to enter notes.
I really want something iTunes/iPhoto like.
Something private that is not a security risk sending who know what, who knows where out to the internet.

Nightmare to just download the thing!
I am so sick of all of these companies requiring the complete creation of an account and all their forms of personal data collection to just download a file!
It took me quit a while to get good fake info working in their database.
These companies need to stop these practices, but more importantly, people need to make sure you give them false information.
It's getting out of control.
It's just what we need, more spam, more of our info being spread around, and more password to try to remember because they all have different requirements and you can't use a common one.

SOHO Notes

Mac Os X 4ever reviewed on 03 Aug 2011
It looks nice, and I have been looking for an app like this for a long time.
I hate Notebook3. It is ugly and complicated.
This looks like what I want, so it is very disappointing that it doesn't work.
The very first thig I id was drop a BBedit document to a folder that I created for notes.
It is ust a text file, and it is viewable through QuickLook, yet Soho Notes can't deal with it at all.
The best I can do is double-click it and it opens in BBedit.
I can't view it in Notes, and I can't change the file type either. It is grayed out and not changeable.
I really want an iTunes/Mac style document manager/note taker, and this looked so promising until I tried it.
I really hope they are able to get it working.

I have missed VisualHub a lot, and I am probably going to register it, but I have a dew questions and issues.
I have been using SlySoft's AnyDVD and AnyDVD Mobile. There is no better software available, but it's Windoze and I have to use Parallels.
I want a good Mac program, and here's my issue, which may just be me not setting it up correctly.
I just tried this and converted an xvid and divx.
I selected to keep the same quality as the original and converted to mp4.
The new files were 2x the size of the originals.
How can I specify a destination size, or do I need to setup multi-pass or something like that?
If the above Windows software works so well, there must be a way to accomplish this with Mac software.
Again, it's probably me, but any help would be appreciated.
I don't want to keep converting 700MB files and getting 1.4 GB files.
CloneDVD Mobile is awesome because you can rip directly from the DVD to a mp4 file. This may be possible with this program and Fairmount, but that something I haven't tried yet.
Thanks, please keep up the Mac development. I hate using ANY Win software.

Not really free for home users as it claims.
I sent an email and am waiting for a response.
It stops after 6 devices and says you need to register.
This may have been realistic for a home user 20 years ago, but now days with all of our computers, routers, iPhones, PSP's, VOIP, xbox's, Apple TV, etc... 6 devices is a joke.
We are a 4 person family. I have the above devices as well as 4 laptops (1 ea) and a few desktops and servers.
A home user could maybe get along with a 25 device limit.
Any business is going to have a LOT more than that!
I am waiting for a response from the company before I rate it.
