Great piece of software that has no equal. I don't need to use ABFR that often, but when I do, it simply does what I need it to do -- batch rename files with ease.
The fact that the developer is offering a free update for purchases since Jan 1, 2011, INCLUDING the MU Spring '11 bundle from a year ago, that is a classy move. Thank you!
Horrible preference pane. With Parental Controls enabled, nothing would show in Safari on my kids accounts when going to websites. Spent over an hour troubleshooting, changing parental control prefs, and even after deleting GlimmerBlocker the websites STILL would not show. After reading of another user having the same problem, I reinstalled GlimmerBlocker, then disabled it in the preference pane, and THEN deleted it, and now everything is back to normal. Does not work with Parental Controls under 10.7.3.
I don't recall an OS update from Apple that's had more demand from users to "return to the old way of doing things" than 10.7 Lion. Change back the mouse scrolling, return Mail to its old look, etc, etc.
I just rediscovered FinderPop after using it for years prior to OS X. I think FinderPop was the first ever shareware/freeware title I donated money to. Was sad to see it go after OS X came out. I didn't even know this was back on OS X after all this time. Thanks to MacUpdate! I am glad to be using FinderPop on my Macs once again. I love being able to right click to access my volumes, apps, and documents with ease, among other things.
Freeware apps do not open telling you how many hours behind the developer is in being paid at his rate of $35/hour. I have no problem with the developer expecting money for his hard work, but then make it a shareware app! Don't pawn it off as freeware and then nag me to death when I go to use it.
I've read your website and understand what you mean by fairware, but like you say, MU doesn't have that category so you must pick one of the others. Freeware is software freely given away by the developer. No bugging for payment when you go to use it. Shareware apps expect payment for use and typically nag and/or have a use cut off time. Your software expects payment for use and nags so is closer to shareware than it is freeware, plain and simple.
I am looking at MU's broad categories of freeware vs. shareware. Does moneyGuru currently request payment from end users? Do you ask for more compensation after you put further development into a previously fully compensated app? How can you call that freeware?
As for your distinction for selling development time vs. the right to use the software, to the end user it does not matter... it is all payment for the use of the software. Another developer could create a category "Starvationware" where they expect payment so all the money raised from the software goes to feed starving children around the world. Should Starvationware be classified as Freeware or Shareware on MU? The developer may not even get a dime of that money. Whatever classification a developer makes, to the end user payment is being requested for the use of the software, and that falls under the broad umbrella of shareware.
@Amcarter3: If you are looking for the features and capabilities of MoneyGuru, perhaps you can read the developer's description and read the reviews other users have left to see what they have to say about it. My original post was a comment and not a review. It seems that once the developer got past his knee-jerk reaction, what I had to say produced a change, so it wasn't a total waste of time.
iSale needs to be updated to better reflect the changes that take place at eBay. For instance, I received a notice weeks before that in August eBay was going to allow titles to have 25 more characters, but about a month later iSale is still limited to the old character limit (55, I think). Also, iSale allows insurance as an option for shipping, but eBay has not permitted that for years. For a paid app, the developer needs to be more attentive to the changes and incorporate these into this program.
MemoryCloud is free to download, but it requires a cloud subscription of $10/month for 25 GB of storage, $20/month for 100 GB, or $50/month for 250 GB to use. I am not going to rate the program since I chose not to pay to use it, but the seller should not list this as a "free" app. I can download any shareware app for free, even use them for a time. It is dishonest to bill MemoryCloud as a "free" app because you cannot even use it without paying for a subscription.
Thanks for that info, ATaylor. I downloaded and began the registration process in the app which re-directed me to their website. On that web page it only lists the pricing plans and says nothing of a free level. Guess I gave up too soon. It would have been more helpful to me if MemoryCloud could have been more forthcoming with the subscription information and included the free level when displaying the tiered pricing.
