MacKeeper

JoeNoname reviewed on 03 Nov 2011
MacKeeper, a crapware by any other name

Mackeeper is at the opposite of what a Mac App should do.

The more I look into it, the more it is smelling rotten. Your marketing is full of gimmicks and shenanigans, Just that should be a warning to any potential buyers. (read turkeys)

1) MacUpdate should have in big bold letters that they are an affiliate of MK!

2) Mackeeper is basically an app that bundles either free stuff, or provides a GUI for command lines. It's great for a 12 years old, but passed that....

You pretend a value of $590 ??? My A**!

Let's review that claim...
Antivirus:
$0 Sophos Mac (Free for home)
Btw, their antivirus scans DMG!!!
They don't use Wine, it's native on Mac.

Antitheft:
$0 Prey Project. It rocks! Take a look a them and ...copy them. what else...

Backup
$0 Time Machine.
ZeoDisk "in Dev for 2 years"
yup, I am going to sell a product "only partially available" great!

Data Encriptor
$0 True Cript
Also, the trick of flipping text to hide it :-)
of course, if you look for foobar.dmg but you flipped it to ƃɯp˙ɹɐqooɟ you can't really find it. Really well hidden ....
but hey, 12 yrs old ....
I will use my trusted AES-256 for free.

Shredder:
$0 Secure delete. Yeah, it's not a gutman, but make it 2 secure delete and you all set.
Unless the NSA is after you, in that case: Degaussing, or the very-heavy-rock.app

Fast Cleanup
$0 Monolingual

$0 App Cleaner

$0 Find file

etc etc etc

So, here we are: $39.95 for what?
Support . Ok, yeah, there is a support
that's what? $10
Marketing spending $15 , ref fees, etc, the rest is profit

ok, then your app is valued at 10 bucks.

Also, when I read:
"Your download of a fully functional trial version of MacKeeper"
I almost want to sue you.
It SHOULD BE: "Your download of a fully functional trial version of MacKeeper" "WITH MANDATORY REGISTRATION"

once registered, then comes the spam.....

Scare tactics
Shenanigans
dubious claims
Adds ? WTF?

Pffffff. You sell wind and a little support for 39.95
[Version 1.8.2]

In Re: To Sana Paul.

Nota Bene:
i hereby provides links to free applications that could (eventually) replace MacKeeper.
I encourage users to donate a small amount in order to promote the dev of excellent open source software.
For the price of a coffee, you can have better than "Pay" software.
If you don't, well... in the future you could be stuck with app such as McSkammer.

Dear, you gave me a pre-chewed vague reply with shallow arguments. I would appreciate if you could reply in a more concise manner.

I am not against the fact that you sell your app, I am against your misleading marketing and your shenanigans.
It seems to appear to me, that, hypothetically speaking, the name “MacKeeper” could possibly signify that the goal is to “KEEP”. A client. AKA retain.

I did mention that the "value" ($10) of your bundle was in the support, but here again, I could argue. As I could argue that you are trying to sell a non-existent product. ( Yes you do, in clear and plain sight. )

MacKeeper swims in really shadowy waters:
When you spend 50% of 39,95 getting new clients, it's a sign that your growth is generated by (more than likely) truncated reviews. On the top of that, if you apply your omnipresence on Google ads, I smell a 55% on Customer Acquisition
After all you pay an average of $2 CPC, no?

It took you a very long time to provide the uninstaller, which is fishy. But when you “threatened” people that provided a solution, that was really bad ….

“We are sorry to inform you that this Solution has been suspended for a brief period as FixKB have received a formal complaint and we must investigate our position before taking any further action.”
http://www.fixkb.com/2011/03/remove-mackeeper.html

Pretending a value of $500something dollars is nothing short of a lie. So childish....
-yes, i know...numbers...
You have overinflated an over-inflation. Good job!
Proof: You pretend $510,60 value while including $60 Value for a Product That you can not provide as of Nov 18, 2011.
Hence when I mentioned that you were selling wind, I should have said that it was more like “flat” air.

But hey! I just saved $510 dollars by not buying MacKeeper. Yay!
So, If I don't buy it twice, I can buy a brand new iMac!!!
And if i can buy a brand new iMac, it's brand new, hence, I don't need Mackeeper!
Which makes me save $510 again!!!!!
And that’s called a syllogism. Works great, huh? : Apparently, I got a brand new Mac and I saved 3 times $510

As a repeat, MacKeeper has not invented anything: Re-bundle free stuff , or re-license-it, and that's pretty much it. All of that for “$510,60 Value , a 90%Off!!!!”

-What? 90% off ? Wow! It-must-be-such-a-great-deal!!!
So, next time, if you bundle the Where-is-the-start-button.app , (a $10,000 value) you could claim 99.99% off . Double Yay!

My Mac (that has a LIFETIME OSX license) is protected, more efficiently, by Prey Project and Sophos.
Your antivirus works on Wine, hence is an emulation of an AV made for Win and does not even check DMG's, does not even go down few layers of compression, and even skip a mere zipbomb.
As for Prey. Pfffff , it rocks ! but you could still pillage the code of Prey, it’s open source GNU.
Talking about that… isn’t what happened with your Growl Style notifications? Or was it a genuine once again MacKeeper code?

The idea of bundling apps is not bad, it simply that your Marketing has almost reached the legal scam level.
Addendum: As of Nov 18, you are officially misleading customers
I almost expect very soon to see MacKepper hiring Bernard Madoff as Marketer-in-Chief, that’s how bad you are.

Please, name me ONE genuine function of MacKeeper besides the support and I'll apologize.

On the other side, I do appreciate the fact that you sign by "PR Manager": I am very pleased to see at least some honesty.

So, To prove my point about the $500 value.

(Side note: According to your profile, it appears that your are also enjoying free open source applications. You could have purchased Word or Pages for a small fee and a LIFETIME license. Tsk tsk tsk ….)

Free Support (For EVERYTHING!!!)
http://bit.ly/uAtsXb

Prey Project
http://preyproject.com/

Sophos Free AV Home Edition
http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

Monolingual (languages and cluster remover)
http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/

Encryption
True Crypt (that is SERIOUS stuff)
http://www.truecrypt.org/

Encrypted DMGs On Mac
http://easymactips.blogspot.com/2009/08/encrypted-disk-image.html

De-Encrypter (please be patient: AES128/256 is not a joke)
https://www.georgestarcher.com/?cat=41

Duplicate finder
Finder??? (hey, psst, there is a “+” button. Take a look…)
Terminal?
ChipMonk?

As a final , you mention Zeodisk for a value of $60 ???
For a mere 3GB?

IT IS NOT EVEN WORKING!!!!!
http://mackeeper.zeobit.com/zeodisk

So, take your 510.60 value, and drop it to $450.60 because, here, we have potentially material for false advertizing.
Any bloodthirsty lawyer could sue you under the 14th and a bunch of other consumer protection regulation (quick! Call your counsel, it’s true! )

DropBox gives you up to 16GB for free (students with .edu adresses)(10GB for regular folks)
(ahem, with AppleScript editor, one line and 1 minute, you could add as many DropBox on a single user. :-)

Etc etc etc …

So Dear Sana, Please feel free to answer…
Thank you for your time.
