Uno

Iangreig reviewed on 10 Mar 2012
Some unique features e.g. very good implementation on word and character count and ability to keep window on top. Good for blog/twitter writers in particular.

It's very minimal but that's the intention and it has a niche.

Curio

Iangreig reviewed on 11 May 2011
I use Curio to bring together structure for talks and articles. I typically have a mindmap in the centre with blocks of text, quotations etc above and below, and on occasions, this is my 'speaker's notes'.
This is an excellent, mature app and probably one of two worthy equivalents to MS OneNote. My experience of Zengobi's support has been red hot -- quick, helpful and friendly. The help resources are comprehensive, but I did need some help with more advanced features – that I found was readily provided.
I have no connection with Zengobi, but I have been really helped by this app and appreciate its steady development -- and felt I needed to communicate this.

Together

Iangreig reviewed on 03 May 2011
I have used Together since it was called KIT -- indispensable ready-reference for files I am working on. Offers a preview read of everything except my mindmaps (which is asking a bit much!). Word preview is editable for highlighting, etc. Stable. Haven't found a downside. I don't know the dev but I commend him for frequent enhancements.

The licence fee of $20 does seem a lot when substantially the same app, Notational Velocity, is free and open source, and an excellent fork of it, NVAlt, which uses a very good implementation of Markdown and Preview, is also free.

I would get the latter

and think about giving the developer, Brett Terpstra, a voluntary donation if you think it's as good as I do

Essentials

Iangreig reviewed on 06 Apr 2011
Set up collections of apps, docs, images etc for work practices or individual projects e.g. I have one labelled "Comms" that has a couple of browsers, Mail, a diary app and MacJournal where I log what happens day to day, and I can set up one for each project with the relevant apps and folders. Good interface, easy to use, hot key brings up the window – it all just works. OK, there's no demo but advantage of app store is that the price point and therefore value is exceptional. My advice (no connection with developer!) – buy it.

MarkMyWords

This is designed for web authoring but I use a lot for rough drafts of structured text which I can do really quickly with Markdown. Better than some other similar apps because you can see what happening to the structure almost in real time. You can use Textile if you prefer. It all just works. I think it will be great for blogging, I just haven't got around to that using MMW yet.

FreeMind

Iangreig reviewed on 10 Dec 2010
Nodes are auto-positioned and repositioning (using arrow keys!) is limited. Furthermore, does not follow convention of starting at 1300hr and working round clockwise.

This is a "cannot use" dealbreaker for me.

Can live without hoist facility but cannot work with inflexible interface.

The thing I really like about Freemind is that it is cross-platform, but as it stands, I cannot use it

Postbox
Iangreig commented on 30 Sep 2010
I tried the free version earlier. Major drawbacks were, no SpamSieve integration coupled with poor internal spam handling, poor integration with Max OSX, lack of cogent connection with developers, who I found less-than-straightforward.
The SpamSieve thing is a deal-breaker and evidently this hasn't been addressed in v.2
If I wanted to use Thunderbird, I would just use that. Why pay $40?
With multiple accounts to handle, I find Mail better in all respects, especially integration.

Simply Notes

Iangreig reviewed on 13 May 2010
Some good ideas, versatile

++Like rich text facility, would be better with some simple formatting on menubar

-- needs word count. Basic essential for anything that makes words.

-- Logo doesn't do it for me. Prefer clean, simple designs. This looks a bit spooky.

Decompose

IanGreig reviewed on 17 Dec 2007
I find that Decompose scores over Photoshop by having a brush to define the transitional edge ares where pixels may be foreground image or background.

A cut-out in PhotoShop relies on performing a very accurate selection, knocking out the background and then doing a lot of smoothing of the edges. In Decompose you make a broad-brush selection of the edge area, covering the whole border between foreground and background, from which the app. calculates which is which, removes the background to transparency and gives a smooth edge.

It seems to work well even if there isn't a lot of contrast between foreground and background. If you can see it, you can cut it out.

Well worth the money to save time and effort -- and if you need to make good quality, foolproof cut-outs in a hurry, you'll thank the developers.

I think some sensitivity controls would help, and I felt the need of grab tool with a spacebar shortcut to navigate around the image, but this is only a v1.n application and these are only minor refinements that are bound to come in future releases..
